Sapiens: A Graphic History: The Birth of Humankind (Vol. 1)

I loved Sapiens the book despite a few caveats like missing Heron of Alexandria (steam), awesomeness like the Antikythera Device, and suggesting England in the middle ages was a backwater. During the first century and a half of the Norman period in the high middle ages it flourished until anti-jewish pogroms murdered or made refugees of thousands, misogyny ruined women lead businesses, and the dreaded beast of climate change ended an incredible era of prosperity with William the Bastard commonly known as the Conqueror being most likely the richest person in the world (the Mansa Musa of the 11th century CE) and PPP for the average person was excellent for that century and a half much like during the brief Norman Sicilian Renaissance. Onto this book though it has a solid and well made hard cover. The paper is thick matte stock which surprised me differing from most "comic book" style graphic novels but it is good enough to have good color retention. The art is good reminding me more of something in the 1980s made for educational purposes released by a textbook company or government office more than a modern graphic novel. Or like a comic in the newspaper like Dennis the Menace. I've been reading the book to my young child today and we've been enjoying its prose and he really likes the art more than I do. He particularly liked the mammoths and the Bering strait portion because it reminded him of the Ice Age movies. Highly recommend it.

A fascination materialist story of how we came to be and what we have become. A very clear, enjoyable read.

Hoping to help my son achieve a larger perspective of our world and our place in it, I purchased this book for him. When it arrived I was so pleased with the format, like a comic book, but not really. It is packed with so much information that I could not put it down. The story lines are interwoven beautifully, this is a well crafted educational piece of art in my opinion. My son took to it immediately, I was glad that I had read it before him because the questions started rolling and his mind opened up, it took him awhile but he did read the whole book and I do indeed believe that it did a wonderful job of opening his eyes and enlarging his perception of the world. I would recommend this book to any parent, even for you too! I learned a lot reading it myself! It is simply excellent.

Bought wrong one but okay for the kids.

It is a amazing book, very easy to read and stimulating. A great way to understand ourselves by knowing our origins.

I've read the printed version of this book, skimmed it really. Harari is a great thinker, synthesist, and writer. But reading words is very left brain. The graphic presentation is right brain. To fully absorb the material, both books would be best. You can see I'm a fan of the graphic book! Just a note though, even though this is a graphic work of non-fiction does not mean that school kids will necessarily understand it, though they might if a caregiver or teacher guides them through the material. Also, adults and teens who don't believe in science or evolution will be unlikely to change their minds just from this book. The book is quite logical and well presented. However those who decry evolution use their emotional connections to religious doctrine, not their rational brains, to guide their views of evolution.

Harari's ability to make deep and interesting connections in a graphic novel format is so refreshing. Easily digestible in a couple of reading sessions this book helped me solidify some thoughts of my own on the nature of humanity and more importantly WHY we are built this way.(they aren't bugs, they're features) I quickly bought some of his other books as well as the other graphic novel on the nature of human civilization (which is the better of the two books by my estimation....if you're only going to get one get that one, this one is a close second)The other reviews already cover how awesome this book is. Just get it. You won't be sorry.

Puede ser que para un adolescente o un niño pensar en leer un gran libro de muchas páginas sea una tarea pesada a pesar de su ligera narrativa. Si esa misma obra está condensada por su autor y convertida en comic, es ideal para los más jóvenes. Mi hijo de 14 lo agotó en unas 4 sentadas, con un estilo de ilustración sencillo, súper agradable, Yuval nos da su versión corta del afamado Sapiens original. Un extraordinario libro para regalar a la familia y si es en pasta dura aún mejor. Es un bello libro para que nos acompañe en casa.

I bought this book and can say that I was pleasantly surprised that this graphical book would cater for people at all ages. This is very easy to read, distill, and the graphics vividly captures your imagination. My teenage daughter loved reading the book and this was a good way for me to introduce her to non-fiction books. Would definitely recommend for parents like me who wants to have a book that they can read and share with their kids.
