Truly Disappointing - Especially if you grew up on the Hitman Franchise
I have been mostly a PC gamer, but I was gifted an xbox and started to play catch up on titles I've been wanting to play. The Hitman series has been probably my favorite ever since it first came out in 2000. The first 2 games in the series are quite dated, but they were fun nonetheless. Hitman Contracts was a dark and moody game, but it was a great test of patience and skill, it didn't spoon-feed you anything, and you had to EARN your ratings. Plus, it had a gnarly, bloody grime to it that made it enjoyable. Then there was the GOAT, Blood Money...arguably the best assassin game of all time, and by far the best hitman game of the series. Everything about Blood Money was perfect, and perfectly updated from the previous entries: the music, the atmosphere, the attention to detail in NPCS and locations, the dozens of ways to execute the target, creatively and WITHOUT being spoon fed how to do it. Blood Money was a work of love, and it showed in the little things...when you play a mission in France, the NPCs speak French, the radio playing is French, you know you are in France. When you make a kill in Blood Money, it feels like a kill...the garrote wire feels like a choking execution, the target struggles, when you shoot a target they spray blood and bleed out on the floor profusely, when you knife a target they gurgle and spurt out, the violent acts feel real and intentional. Blood Money is cerebral and brilliant and for a game that came out in 2006, it's better than any hitman game today. Why? SIMPLICITY and PURITY. Absolution was not a hitman game, it was a fun action game labeled as Hitman. Instinct was a painfully bad feature that neutered the difficulty of a hitman game. The story and narrative was so bad and so illogical that it hurts to even think about. Yet, it was a fun game, when you took out a target, you FELT it, guns went BOOM! Explosions and mines exploded loudly and you felt in the thick of it. Gun fights were absolutely astounding in Absolution, if you wanted to wipe out everyone in the level, it was fun to do, they fought you hard, and you had to lay it on heavy to clear the field. Not exactly the best way to play, but you could do it nonetheless and enjoy it! Hitman 2016 was an immediate disappointment, because it was neutered, sanitized, and it kept the STUPIDEST parts of Absolution: hand-holding and instinct. Instinct was poor on its own, but instinct WITH a map? That is child's play. It basically tells you exactly where the target is without even trying to look, just look for the big red dot that your X ray vision provides. I hate it with a passion. The opportunity tracking is also painfully simplistic, it literally tells you step by step and inch by inch where to go and what to do, a complete rookie who has never played Hitman could knock out a level in minutes with this method, it is a complete dumbing down of the entire approach to hitman thus far. You used to have to FIGURE IT OUT, but nope, the dev's just decided to spoon feed you 5 different ways to take out a target. Of course you don't NEED to track opportunities, you can do it your own way, but the inclusion of the feature is just embarrassing. The inability to customize weapons is another missed opportunity where Blood Money did it right. How was it sanitized? The violence is basically pg-13. In Blood Money and Absolution, when you shot a target they blew back, they sprayed blood, they went flying, you felt like you took them out, the gun blast was forceful. in Hitman 2016 it's like a whisper and nothing happens. I took out some bodyguards with a shotgun and it was like a BB gun, and no blood sprays out, they just gently fall down, and the gunshots themselves are quiet and weak, a shotgun should sound like a SHOTGUN, BOOM! not a little puff from a peashooter. All guns sound weak and muffled this way, not just suppressed ones. When you take out a target with a knife or melee object, it's just one little poke and they're down, there's no struggle, no blood spray, no sound, they just plop. When you subdue a target to break their neck, it's the same, there's no struggle and they just break like a paper doll. It is TOO easy to take out bad guys, bodyguards and targets, they just flop over so easily, it's like an old movie from the 1950's where if a guy gets shot he just holds his chest and falls over into a neat, bloodless pile. If you want to take the time execute a perfectly clean SA execution, you can, but the timed opportunities, the hand-holding, the dumbed down simplicity of it all just feels so simple, it doesn't feel like an achievement. Getting SA in blood money was not easy, you earned it, with this game you achieve it easily with clues, it feels given. This game was dumbed down to be easier to beat for newcomers, it was sanitized to be less violent, it punishes you for using guns or getting into gunfights, it makes it super easy to kill targets, and last but not least, the details are GONE. Remember how I said in previous games when you went to a location it felt like a location? This game skipped the details. Seriously, you're in Italy and everyone speaks in a regular American accent? You really couldn't take the time to give NPC's an Italian accent? Why is everyone, in every level, basically American or English, with a different skin? It's so damn lazy especially for a game with such a budget and such beautiful graphics. You don't even feel like you're in a location, it feels like a whitewashed lazy attempt at that location. I could go on even longer than this, but I am sorely disappointed, to the point I am not playing or purchasing the next 2 games. Blood Money was and still is endlessly enjoyable, Absolution was flawed and stupid, but it was at least fun to play, this game is too simple to enjoy, too neutered, too sanitized, and just feels like a 007 ripoff, it isn't the Hitman it used to be. Seriously, 47 has to stop a military coup from ruining Morocco? That's James Bond, not 47. It's essentially a "PG-15" spy thriller that got rid of the best parts of blood money, kept the worst parts of absolution, and watered it all down to be a more commercial, mainstream, lazy product. It gets 3 stars for beautiful graphics and cinematics, the rest is a dud.

Having played this series backwards I finally got to play the first in the series. I really is so good. The missions are so detailed and there is so much to do, lots of different ways to get rid of the target and some slightly funny and ridiculous but that is part of the fun!
