A Wordless picture book
Rosie’s Glasses by Dave WhamondPublisher: Kids Can PressISBN: 9781771389914Thanks to NetGalley and publisher Kids Can Press for the ebook ARC of Rosie’s Glasses by Dave Whamond in exchange for an honest review. In this wordless picture book, Rosie wakes up in a monochrome world, with a dark cloud over her head. As she goes through her miserable, grey day, the cloud follows. Her bad day continues with chaos and pouring rain seems to just make it worse. But then on her way home from school, Rosie finds a pair of strange glasses. When she puts them on, her world is transformed into vivid, joyful colour. And she can now hear the beauty and fun in everything around her — and her dark cloud has disappeared. Are the glasses magic? Or could it be that changing how we look at the world can change the way we experience it?I give this book a rating of 4 stars. I am not very fond of wordless books but the pictures were amazing and very detailed. My 4 year old daughter really enjoyed looking at the book.

There are not many stories that say so much in so few words – or in this case, in none at all. This wordless picture book truly gives meaning to the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words”.Rosie wakes up one morning with a dark cloud above her head, which follows her everywhere she goes. She sees the world in joyless shades of grey… that is, until she finds an unusual pair of glasses, which allow her to see everything in colour. Finally she’s able to appreciate the wonder all around her. There are so many details that you could easily miss on the first or second “read”, such as the sad little hamster in the school classroom and the fact that Rosie actually sees a colourful butterfly before she puts the glasses on, suggesting that the glasses are in fact a metaphor for a more positive frame of mind. The intentionally dull (yet nevertheless stunning!) illustrations evoke feelings of sadness, which turn to joy with beautiful explosions of colour as Rosie allows happiness into her life. The ending is hugely satisfying, but I won’t give that away!
