yes and no. if you want different music playing in different rooms you have to get multi user prime music account. more $

I am looking for a speaker to connect to echo dot via line in. will this need to be switched to a line in mode every time i ask alexa to play music?

You can directly connect the Echo Dot line out to the Play 5 line in. There are two problems: it requires that you set the Sonos to line in mode and the Dot line out is hardwired to bypass the internal speaker. That means if you use the Sonos for something else you can't hear Alexa. What I did to make this a little better was to bluetooth the Dot to a line out device (usually used to bluetooh your phone to your car speakers) connected to the Sonos. You can verbally switch the Dot to internal speaker or bluetooth. The Sonos and Dot can still be used without moving wires around.

If I use the line-in function on the Play 5 will the music play on other sonos speakers?

The Line-In input (found on PLay 5 1st and 2nd gen, Connect and Cnnect Amp) allows you to connect an external audio source (CD player, TV, etc.). You can stream the material to any combination Sonos devices in your Sonos system. Simply select the Line-In source in your controller software (found in your list of music sources such as Music Library, Radio, Sonos Playlist, etc.).Hope this helps
