Will this take a 9 inch pad?  What size is shipped?

I have no idea why I care enough to answer this, but look: when you have a wheel supported at the center, the larger the wheel, the faster the perimeter moves. I think that we can all agree on that. The formula is simply 2𝜋r / (RPM/60). So let's do a little thought experiment.

The device's RPM's range from 2800 -8300. It comes with a 2" and a 3" disc. So let's start there:
The 2-inch disc can range from 16.66mph (at it's farthest edge, at 2800rpm) to 49.4mph (at 8300rpm, in sanding mode). Pretty big jump, right?
A 3-inch will range from 25 - 74.1mph (or 150% of the previous values. Okay seems sensible for a 150% increase in diameter). 
But wait... NINE inches is 3x bigger than the 3-inch! That would put its low end at 75mph (the sanding speed of the 3-inch disc)... and it's high end at a blistering 222.2mph!

That's FAST for a piece of... well... ANYTHING to be travelling. To put this in perspective, the most powerful Class 5 tornado EVER MEASURED hit 300mph in momentary spurts. The fastest hurricane hit 200mph. Think about that. BOTH are MORE than capable of TEARING APART BRICKS AND CONCRETE.

Even assuming the pad DIDN'T immediately tear itself to shreds flinging shrapnel and ejecta across the room at hurricane-force speeds (say you've got a kevlar and carbon fiber disc) what do you surmise would happen to.... whatever you're intending to polish (to death) when you touch an abrasive moving at sustained Class 4 tornado speeds to its surface?

Unless you're trying to "buff out" some lava that's hardened on your car... maybe some obsidian?... this prolly isn't the right tool. In fact? Maybe power tools aren't your best call in general.

What’s the difference between using this and a drill motor to do the same work?

I’ve used both and a drill just doesn’t put out the rpm’s needed to accomplish that deep polishing shine that this little unit with give you. However you will need extra batteries and I even purchased an extra charger...
