Routledge English Language Introductions cover core areas of language study and are one-stop resources for students. Assuming no prior knowledge, books in the series offer an accessible overview of the subject, with activities, study questions, sample analyses, commentaries, and key readings โ all in the same volume. The innovative and flexible โtwo-dimensionalโ structure is built around four sections โ introduction, development, exploration, and extension โ which offer self-contained stages for study. Each topic can also be read across these sections, enabling the reader to build gradually on the knowledge gained. Global Englishes, Third Edition , previously published as World Englishes , has been comprehensively revised and updated and provides an introduction to the subject that is both accessible and comprehensive. Key features of this best-selling textbook include: coverage of the major historical, linguistic, and sociopolitical developments in the English language from the start of the seventeenth century to the present day exploration of the current debates in global Englishes, relating to its uses as mother tongue in the US, UK, Antipodes, and post-colonial language in Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and lingua franca across the rest of the globe, with a new and particularly strong emphasis on China a range of texts, data and examples draw from emails, tweets and newspapers such as The New York Times , China Daily and The Straits Times readings from key scholars including Alastair Pennycook, Henry G. Widdowson and Lesley Milroy activities that engage the reader by inviting them to draw on their own experience and consider their orientation to the particular topic in hand. Global Englishes, Third Edition provides a dynamic and engaging introduction to this fascinating topic and is essential reading for all students studying global Englishes, English as a lingua franca, and the spread of English in the world today. Review: Used it everyday for class - Great theoretical book. Brings up good points and used it everyday for class. Review: Good book - Good book.

This is an excellent book and deals with controversial issues
This is an excellent book and deals with controversial issues. It helps us to reflect on the status quo that native English is the only framework of reference in the world of English use and to re-evaluate non-native English speakers' Englishes in the perspective of English as a lingua franca. The book is easy to read without the use of native English idioms, showing friendliness to international readership, which I assume include both native and non-native English speakers. Jenkins is a great researcher, leading a cutting-edge research area of English as a lingua franca and global Englishes. This book shows her understanding of language issues in the contemporary world and offers us the new lens to explore issues in various contexts. However, this book might make old-fashioned brains uncomfortable, given its challenge to the established wisdom that native English speakers have the real custody of English.

Overall I was disappointed with this contribution
Overall I was disappointed with this contribution. There are other publications (with similar titles) which cover the main topics in more depth and with more insight.

It's a 'read once and never again' type of book.
The book reads as though it were never edited. The book jumps around referring to sections to come. Jenkins gives you review questions mixed in with paragraphs of text at the end of each section. There is also a great deal of the book which is unnecessary. I would like just the facts please. That's what something that calls itself a "resource book" should be. Instead you will have to wade through Global Englishes like it were mud and hope that you reach the other side with your shoes still on your feet and your brain still intact. I found the book's subject matter to be highly controversial. I would think that if English is not your first language that you will like the book a bit more. For example, it's alright if you can't pronounce the word, don't even try to sound like the Native English person. You are just speaking the English you own. You like pidgin English more because it reflects your culture? Not a problem, rejoice in your individuality. If you are a teacher of English from a Native country (US, Britain, Australia, South Africa) and attempt to put into practice what you have read don't expect your teaching contract will be renewed, (nor should it). It's important to explore topics such as those posed by Jenkins but to give them an academic voice it also means that people will carry the banner forward. That's the problem. This is one book that is quite easy to put down. You will likely be quite relieved when it is over. I know I am. I firmly believe that books such as this are filled with ideas and concepts that will be laughed at by future generations. There are good writers and bad writers. Jenkins is the latter. It's a very difficult read, so be prepared.

Reader-friendly and very well organized guide
A reader-friendly, very well organized guide for someone interested in Global Englishes. It provides an introductory view of the most relevant matters to this field, while inviting the readers to draw their own conclusions. I genuinely appreciate this book being written AND updated from time to time as it has been through new editions.

The best manual on Global Englishes ever!
Jenkins's 3rd edition of this manual -that was once entitled "World Englishes"- is a must for applied linguists, ELF scholars, teachers of English at all levels, and language practitioners at large. The book covers most of the areas of research that are concerned with the controversial topic of the global spread of English and the consequent process of diversification that this language has been undergoing as a result of its contact with diverse local languages. The book is divided into four sections (A, Introduction; B, Development; C, Exploration; D, Extension), containing eight units each. Every theme is developed horizontally (i.e. from section A to section D), so that the teacher may decide how deep their students should go into each topic. Besides, it is not necessary to follow a linear reading of the book, and the teacher is free to select and order the units according to their needs. As one of the most outstanding linguists in the field of English as a lingua franca (ELF), Jenkins provides a comprehensive view of the historical, social, economic, and political reasons that have led to the internationalisation of English today. In addition, she takes into consideration the pedagogical implications of ELF and how English language teaching (ELT) is going to be affected by it. Jenkins, however, does not tend impose her own point of view, especially when she deals with the most controversial issues. In fact, she prefers to leave some of the fundamental questions open to the reader (i.e. the student), and provide them with relevant information and appropriate contributions that help them make up their mind. Finally, the manual contains excellent activities for the students and a section called "Further reading" that is very useful for those who intend to write university papers on specific topics.
