How do you turn the display off (but keeping the heater on?)?

Press and hold the setting button on the heater for 3 seconds.

Does the front of the panel stay cool?

On full power the bottom 12" of glass on our 2000w heater gets too hot to touch. The top half is touchable. Even on half power the botton few inches get hot enough that you wouldn't want to touch it. The rear of the heater just gets warm (no risk of setting fire to the wallpaper...)
