Q: is this compatible with the robo3d r1 plus?

I don't know specifically. Does the robo3d r1 plus use a Ramps board / Arduino Mega combination, if so then it should be compatible. Note that you may need to recompile and flash updated firmware to your printer controller it if is not already enabled for the display. There is an adapter board that comes with the display for connecting to a Ramps board. I am using the display with a Smoothieboard clone which has the Exp 1 and 2 connectors already on the controller board. In my case the ribbon cables from the display were keyed backwards so I had to remove the little key tab on the side of the connectors and plug them in "backwards" on the Smoothieboard. Then I had to change the configuration for the Smoothieware to talk to the display, which was very easy to do with Smoothieware, no reflashing of the firmware required. Also note that you need a good source of 5V or else your display will be dim with poor contrast. On the Smoothieboard clone there is already a 5V regulator so when 12V power is applied for the steppers the display is nice and bright with good contrast.Maybe try some searching on Google and YouTube for more specific information.

In a word, Yes. Might depend on what processor board you are using to drive the Ramps board, but if it's an Arduino processor board all you have to do is to enable the full graphics controller in the configuration.h file.

In firmware, you need to select which type of LCD controller you use. For example, in Marlin 1.0 you need to - #define REPRAP_DISCOUNT_FULL_GRAPHIC_SMART_CONTROLLER
