This review is for the "Tripp Lite SK5TEL-0 Surge Protector Wallmount.." A serious quality surge protector for the classic little wall mount plug-in often found on kitchen back splash walls? The folks who make the ISOBAR lines of surge protectors appear to be upping the technical ante here. PROS: ------ (1) UL1449 3RD EDITION TESTED (see below for details) with let through 400/400/500V clamping voltage. UL1449 is the UL testing gold standard and 3rd Edition is the latest and most stringent (see below). While 330V clamping voltage would be much better, what can one expect from a surge protector a little bigger than a deck of cards. (2) EMI/RFI FILTERING for up to 45db noise attenuation. (3) Has a CIRCUIT BREAKER (15A) in the form of a fuse. If it blows and you meet the warranty qualifications they will send you a replacement. (4) 1080 Joules AC Suppression and 1875W total outlet watts, which are high for little wall mount plug-ins. (5) Has some phone/fax line (RJ11) surge protection, as well. (6) For many decades Tripp Lite has taken the technical high-road and offered product quality/survivability over the long haul and the company appears to make a good faith effort to honor their warranties. A little wall mount plug-in cannot come near the durability/capability of their ISOBAR surge protectors, however I would trust their take on it as a technical best effort within the constraints, and their UL1449 3rd Edition verified status gives that trust some merit. POTENTIAL CONS/SUGGESTIONS: -------------------------------- My SK5TEL holds into the wall very well, however, I would suggest to Tripp Lite that they offer a version that screws the unit into some outlets via the center pin. Consider offering a version that has 2.1A USB charging receptacles, though of course anyone can plug in charging units. Consider offering a GFCI version of it. UL1449 3rd EDITION: -------------------- Okay, so you read somewhere that you want a UL1449 verified/tested product with the lowest clamping voltage you can find, preferably down to 330V, <1 nanosecond response time (SK5TEL has <1ns), etc., but what added value does UL1449 3RD EDITION give us? UL1449 3rd Edition became effective 09/2009 (it's an ANSI standard, too, now). Any surge protection device (SPD) made after that must meet the new tests to be UL1449 verified. Why choose a product that meets the new edition of the certification (much less meets any old UL1449 cert.) if you are serious about surge protection? Here are two reasons: (1) It added a STRESS TEST for Type 3 SPDs (this is Type 3) called the Duty Cycle Test. They electrically whack it 15x to see if they can ruin its ability to protect, cause a fire or shock hazard, etc. (2) The UL1449 3rd Edition tests with 6x MORE SURGE AMPERAGE than the 2nd Edition test did. NOTES: ------- Someone was wondering if this can be placed over a mount screw and the answer is yes, for us it is fitting over a standard duplex outlet receptacle with a mount screw in the middle. If you are plugging this into a GFCI wall outlet as I did, removing the plastic stability pole that goes into the lower outlet's ground was fast and easy (I used pliers). Beware that many small appliances can demand a LOT of power that can add up if used at the same time, so careful not too much at the same time on a single outlet. For example, this unit handles 1875 watts output, but you still want to be careful what you run simultaneously. I read reviews that said the single Surge Protector takes up the switch plate... the 4 singles Surge Protectors I ordered allowed for another plug if placed at the bottom. I ordered a 3 plug Surge Protector from this Brand for an area that needed multiple access. All from the same brand, all well made, heavy quality and all work properly when directions are followed: Plug the item into the surge protector first and then plug the surge protector into the wall socket.

Tripp Lite SK3-0 3 Outlet Portable Surge Protector Power Strip, Direct Plug In This is a very good surge protector, even better if you can get it at a good price. Per the label (see photo, L to R it's the Belkin, Monoprice, then Tripplite) it's tested/listed per UL1449, the standard for Surge Protective Devices (SPD). The Voltage Protection Ratings (VPR) are among the best -- I've seen VPR from 400 to 800 V (lower is better), and the Joule rating is decent. Tripplite has a similar 1 outlet but it's almost the same price as this more versatile 3 outlet. The Monoprice came in a nice eco-friendly cardboard box; the Belkin and Tripplite came in nasty plastic packages. When plugged into a duplex wall outlet, all three still let you use the other outlet (with the Tripplite plugged into the top, and the Belkin and Monoprice plugged into the bottom outlet). The Belkin has the best specs but usually a higher price. I've bought all three of these when the price dipped to around $6-7, often the price is higher like $9-11. I'll buy more of any of these when the price drops down, but I'll tell you what I will NOT buy: anything without UL1449 testing, anything with a 600 V, 800V or higher VPR, or something that advertises a lot of Joules but I can't find out the VPR. For surge protectors I'm more concerned about a good (low) VPR than I am about Joules. Joules indicates how much energy it can absorb before components in the suppressor blow and it no longer protects. Surges vary but let's assume a typical surge had 100 Joules of energy in it. Would you like to have a 800 V (bad) 2000 Joule (great) "surge protector" that lets 800 Volts through to your TV/microwave/computer/washing machine/etc. 20 times before the protected light goes out? I wouldn't. I'd rather have less voltage hitting the expensive device I'm trying to protect, and when the protector burns/wears out, I'll replace it. BTW I think I've only seen 1 time where the protected light went out in my decades of using them, and I have around 20 of various types (they might wear out faster if you live where there are more frequent lightning strikes). I recommend putting a surge protector on every appliance you have that has an electronic (microprocessor-controlled) control panel. If you have an ancient air conditioner, dishwasher, washing machine or microwave with all mechanical controls, you're lucky because it's lasted so long and it's not that vulnerable to surges. But for everyone else, protect your investment with a UL1449 listed Surge Protective Device like this with maximum 500 Volts VPR. The Tripplite says it filters RFI/EMI noise but doesn't state any specs. The Belkin claims to have up to 43 dB noise reduction from 150kHz to ~100MHz. 43 dB is good, but it's the maximum over that frequency range, so no way of telling how little the noise reduction might be at specific frequencies. The Monoprice doesn't claim to do any RFI/EMI filtering. Also the Tripplite and Belkin offer limited lifetime warranties and connected equipment warranties but the Monoprice does not. I have no experience trying to make any warranty claim on these.

This is a surge protector at the top of the range. It is faster than most units, higher joule(energy) capacity on surge , better warranty and made by a leader in electronic device protection. I put this on a wall receptacle to protect an upright freezer. It is flatter than other units I researched and cost of losing food when the surge hits is multiple times more than this cost me. My appliance tech said this is a good investment and will save my freezer.

I presently have it protecting my newly installed garage door opener and it's working great! I would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a single-plug-in surge protector. I especially like the indicator lights for both the current and the ground circuit. They are easily visible on my ceiling in the garage, where I presently have the surge protector located.
