Good game, worth the purchase

I would have rated this 4 1/2 if that were an option, I just think it's better than 4 stars though. The graphics are amazing, as is the soundtrack. The story is good but the game is fairly linear, which to me is a bit of a drawback. I like to explore, and you have pretty much just one direction to go in this game. The fighting mechanics I found to be a bit complex to start out, but once you get the hang of them, it's rather fun, especially trying to build up huge combos and consecutive executions. The multiplayer has been fun so far (only been playing about a week), but it's co-op against npcs. While I like that option, I would love there to be a pvp multiplayer for this game. I think that would be amazing. There are some micro-transactions that can enhance your game experience, but they are not necessary: some just speed up the process a bit while others are purely cosmetic. TL:DR Underrated game, worth the price, should have got more attention imo.

Must have had my expectations too high, or maybe It didn't keep me entertained long enough to see what else it had to offer. I found the fighting system to be extremely redundant after only playing for 2 hours or so, getting into the 3rd chapter of the story. Too much of the same button mashing and short action scenes where you have to press a button to execute the next move. They were the same thing over and over, while fighting many of the same opponents. Got tiring quicker than using the "VATS" system on Fallout 3 & Fallout New Vegas, and had less variety. I play halo games, call of duty games, and bethesda RPG's, and this game did not translate well to me. I'm not sure everyone else will have the same experience but that was my take at least. The story was raved about but wasn't thrilling in my opinion. Graphics were pretty good, I couldn't complain their. Just wasn't entertained enough to explore them further, and the "RPG" elements it supposedly contained were rather lacking in my opinion as well.

Story: The story is one of the strongest aspect of the game because there's not many like it. You play a Roman soldier during the ancient Roman times and go through an impressive story that really picks up steam in the third act of the game. The lore and motivations behind characters in intriguing and the intensity behind following orders and doing what is right brings a fresh take on what it was to be loyal. There was a plot twist at the end of the game that really took me by surprise and made the game even more interesting in terms of story. Graphics: The facial expressions and lighting effects on armor showcased the capabilities of the new generation of consoles. We need to remember that this was a launch title for the Xbox One and it shows how powerful the system could really be. The most jaw-dropping moment was the level taking place in the Colosseum. I've heard the Colosseum would change its terrain for different events and the game developers used to create a dynamic and impressive level creation in real time. Gameplay: The fighting mechanics are very basic and makes the gameplay too repetitive. There's only one button for attacking, another for defending, and one for bashing with your shield. There's not much variety and even makes the boss fights not as interesting. The game also uses strategies with its finishing movies by allowing the player to adjust its bonuses between health, focus, experience, and power. I wish the finishing moves would be more diverse but they never manifested as much as they would. Overall, the game offers a strong story and great visuals but falls short in terms of gameplay. The story is enough to make me finish through the story but it's not enough to motivate me through its multiplayer. I recommend this game to anyone interested in a unique story about ancient Rome.

I got this game a few months after I got my system, and this is the best representation at the moment to what the Xbox One can do in terms of graphics and power. The characters and settings are absolutely stunning, and the cutscenes look good enough to be clips out of a movie. The storyline is immense and enjoyable, with a fun "revenge" plot. On a side note, I believe I completed the campaign roughly four times. The multiplayer arena is surprisingly fun, as well, especially after you've mastered the controls and some of the more complex levels. The biggest flaw with this is that it could become repetitive, and most of the reviewers will tell you it does. However, for me, at no point during the storyline was I bored and the multiplayer only gets repetitive after playing it for several hours on end. Overall, it's one of the better games for the Xbox One that is currently out.

Im writing this review after I have beaten the campaign two times, first the Soldier Difficulty and then the Centurion Difficulty. I also played a couple matches on the Gladiator Mode Solo and Co-Op and I can happily say I do not regret this purchase and Im glad to call Ryse my first Xbox One game! Pros: - Amazing Fun Gameplay! (It is not all QTE. You can choose to do them.) - Cutscenes and Gameplay look beautiful! - The game goes from cutscenes to gameplay one frame to the next without graphics downgrading! - The combat may be simple but its really fun! (The mix of light and heavy attacks, along with blocking, add loads of variety to the combat.) - Executions are brutal! (The execution system never gets old with me.) - A very interesting story with an excellent twist! - Voice commands are pretty cool! (You can command your soldiers to cover you, fire arrows at enemies, Cons: - Doesnt have a multiplayer game mode with more than 2 people as far as im aware of. - Smartglass compatibility isnt very interesting to me.

My first Xbox One game and review... Pros: - strong visuals and cinematics, even the menus are stylish - good enough story and good enough use of a small subset of the Roman mythos that is usually ignored, not focused on...the invasion of Brittan, Nemesis, Damocles aren't well covered. I don't recall these elements in a game before... - I enjoyed the epic "Saving Private Ryan" moments (the one they showed at E3). marching ahead with your army, blocking a hail of arrows and then returning fire was quite fantastic. - some good boss battles - good non-intrusive way to use quick time events by highlighting the enemy in a specific color rather than an obnoxious gigantic A or B or X or Y on the screen... Neutral: - the non-myth part of the story and reality is that Rome was a rather brutal imperialist (obviously) force. thus you're kind of playing the bad guy here. asking an audience to sympathize with the Roman Empire is a little weird. but hey, I haven't seen the Romans in a game or entertainment product in awhile, so why not. Cons: - button mashing. you can get through the game hitting little more than X or Y. shoulder buttons, triggers, others largely unused, indicating a rather simple game. in fact, if you removed the blood/gore, it could possibly be a child's game. it reminded me more of a fighter than a 3rd-person action title. you can miss half the quick-time events without any consequences. you will hit the same damn buttons over and over and over and over again. you will quickly tire of this... - repetitive looking enemies - I can't remember any game that mapped shield to the A button. most games use a trigger for this (e.g. left trigger block, right trigger attack - that's fairly intuitive). it was difficult to get my brain to unlearn that A generally means Action/Advance/Activate, etc. - The game needed more epic army moments and strategy. Instead, thousands of enemies to button mash...not enough variety - not much to upgrade...one weapon, one armor, one etc....More/better RPG elements could have helped kill the monotony and kept the player invested, but it's largely not there...just health, some executions, etc. i barely noticed or appreciated the effects of whatever I upgraded... - Once you advance over an obstacle or through a door, you can't go back, so your missed collectible is gone. Restart the game I guess...I hate that. Overall, it was well worth the price I paid, $39.99 new. It's possible for Crytek to improve upon what they've done here. Obviously they have a premier gaming engine that fuels Crysis and others...I wouldn't give up. Less button-mashing, more variety, more character investment, more RPG elements and they might have something here...They could keep the Roman Empire theme and try to build a new franchise. There simply has to be more for the player to do though...

The game is relatively short, you can do it in about one evening-approximately 6 hours. However the visuals are very stunning. You can pick up items throughout the world and learn a little bit of a detailed history and everything is brought back to life: a historian's playground for sure. The action is fluid and it's make sense in physics and realistic combat. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys history even two parents letting their kids play it however I would like to note that there is a very brief (and I mean like 2 seconds worth) of pornography in the game which is not story-driven, it can easily be ignored, overlooked, look away don't see anything.
