RM4 Pro + Home Assistant + RF Fireplace
What do you with your old remote controlled gas fireplace. Well you don’t just continue to use the remote - no, that would be too simply! Instead you’ll buy this RM4 Pro with plans to connect it to Home Assistant so you can turn off you fireplace when you fall asleep in front of the fire or just before you arrive home. Or just to turn off randomly to mess with your wife. So I can’t say much about the app (which I only used to setup the device and ‘unlock’ it on the local network. What I can say if that once unlocked it connected easily through the Broadlink integration in Home Assistant. It creates a remote.Broadlink entity. Note here: don’t set up things in the Broadcom app they won’t come through to Home Assistant. Another Note: for RF it doesn’t handle roaming signals - one’s where for security reason the frequency keeps changing - keep that in mind before you purchase Now back to the boring nerdy story. From there you can use the remote entity to learn both IR or RF presses. I used it to learn my fireplace RF button presses. Now at first it might seem complicated to learn presses. But once you have one done it’s super fast. When learnt you can add call them through remote.send_command service. This makes it fairly simple to add to your dream automation that your wife will surely not understand or care about. But you’ll be able to smile every time the automation runs. So in summary I have no idea how this works with anything other than Home Assistant. But for my purpose of using it to control items that don’t directly integrate with HA it ticked all the boxes and would recommend.

Automated my blinds
I used this device to automate my blinds with my phone. Super cool and much better than using the RF remote. It took some work to get them automated since the programming can take multiple tries. Yet, the decide did discover the RF code and allowed me to program the buttons for up/down/stop. Simple enough for anyone wish it could automate my ceiling fans also but the fans work outside the RF range. Pretty handy device for home automation of stuff that uses RF controls. Maybe the software could be a bit better but got the job done for me.

Poor app compatibility
I am going to upgrade this because at least part of the problem was Android and part was due to the product spec. Also, I got it working finally, so that makes me a little happier. This product did not work with Android Go. Android Go appears to be a problematic release that looks like it is part of the general set of Android versions, but isn't. But according to some, it is a stripped down version. I bought yet another Android device and that worked fine. The company is partly to blame in that the versions it supports were not better identified and/or may have been wrong at the older end of the release spectrum. I found an app that tells you exactly what range of versions and app support. According to that, the low end of the product did not reach the older device I had (4.x forgot which just now). This appears to be contrary to the indications given by the supplier. The range of lower to upper versions includes the problematic Go version. As far as I can tell by comments and experience Amazon Go should be avoided no matter what. ----- OLDER Setting this thing up was confusing at best. The basic idea is that you send your home Wifi Password to the device so that it can log in to your wifi. OK, but not well explained. Trying to figure out which wifi and which password belongs where is hit and miss. What you are supposed to do at each stage is unclear. My additional issue was that he router's client isolation needed to be turned off to allow the two parts to talk to each other. Having managed to eventually get through that, it did work. I got some devices under control. So far so good. It could be a useful device. However... I wanted to get it to run on a tablet rather than the phone. It doesn't seem that any of the variants of the software work properly on tablets. The latest version won't even show up in the play store for recent versions of Android, yet the software claims it works from 4.0 upwards. The older versions do show up as compatible, but they either crash immediately, or fail to connect. The latter may be due to the different naming of the device between versions. It is not clear. I have tried different versions of the software on both old and brand new tablets without success. Perhaps the latest version should, in theory, work on more recent versions of Android. The app seems pretty generic with the real work being done by the device. The lack of compatibility with versions of Android seems odd, especially considering their claim to work on anything above 4.0.

Is there a more confusing product line on Amazon?
"Go get a BroadLink RM Pro"... the words are meaningless. Which RM Pro? Should it be This RM 4 Pro or this other RM 4 Pro? Different price. Different listing. Is it the same? Who flapping knows. The most confusing product lineup. And it's like they are using the flavor of the week injection molds. Guys. Ever heard of product design? It doesn't come with a power supply. Just a USB Micro to USB A. Who uses Micro any more? I never want to see another micro in my life. And sorry, but to not have a power nugget to plug into the wall is hostile. I ended up plugging it into a laptop to setup everything. The app is dog excrement. I'll pass. Luckily, I was going to use this with Home Assitant. Which my god is this integration a level of complication I don't need in my life. Topping it all off, this remote "supports RF remotes." But it is 0 for 2 on the two RF remotes I have. One for the fireplace and one for some outdoor lights. So this is going back! Oh! I almost forgot. Good freaking luck setting this thing up on your Wifi network. Yes. I have 2.4 ghz. Yes. I also have 5 ghz. But the iOS app WILL NOT proceed past connect to a 2.4 GHZ network. Dude. What century is this? I even pulled out the room's access point (Omada) and disabled the 5 ghz radio and had my phone connect over 2.4. No joy. Because there was 5 ghz advertised on the network, it still wouldn't proceed. Unbelievable! The only way to get this running on a mixed network is to pull out an Android device and use the app there. It jumped forward with no issues at all. So to repeat: you will not be able to set this up on Apple devices!

Great for making devices "smart" and Google Assistant voice command integration
Overall pleasantly surprised, especially with all of the negative reviews online. Broadlink (BL) recently provided a firmware update so perhaps that explains the improvements. Setup was very simple - download the BL app and follow the in-app directions. It'll ask for your phone to be connected to a 2.4Mhz channel of your router - I have Google Wifi which, like many other newer routers, will automatically assign the proper channel to each device, so I ignored the warnings and my phone (on 5Mhz channel) sent the wifi info to BL which then connected to the proper 2.4Mhz channel automatically - no issues. I also then reserved the IP address that my router assigned to BL - not sure if this is required but saw it suggested on another forum. Adding IR/RF remotes was fine - selecting the known brands (e.g. TV > Sony) didn't seem to work for any of my devices so I just used the "learning" capabilities where BL learns the remote codes from each of my remotes which worked flawlessly just takes a few mins to learn all the devices and buttons I wanted. For RF devices (if you dont need RF then get the non-pro version) I didn't know the exact 433.XX frequency but the "auto-detect" feature worked great, then similarly just "learned" my RF buttons from the remote. Once the remotes were all set up, BL "scenes" were also very simple to create allowing me to string together commands across my devices (e.g. I created a "Watch TV" scene which turns on my TV, sets the proper input on my receiver, etc) and can set timing delays between commands if necessary. The best feature (and the reason I bought this) was Google Assistant integration. Once you link your BL account from within the Google Home app, all of the BL scenes you create become available for voice command (e.g. "Hey Google, activate Watch TV"). I created a "Volume Way Up" BL scene that would increase the volume in increments of 5 to avoid having to say the volume command over and over. Another feature I found super helpful is that you can also create Google routines to run a BL scene. Just type out the Google routine's "action" to say "activate <scene name>" (e.g. "activate watch TV"). Since Google routines can have multiple actions, this will be great to be able to have google assistant voice commands control not just BL but other devices on one command. Just need to be careful that your BL scenes aren't named the same as generic Google Assistant command (e.g. turn on the lights) or else Google gets confused. The ability to control devices directly from within the Google Home app is limited to certain device types and basic commands (power on/off, etc), but this wasn't important to me (I cared about voice, and I can use the BL app for everything else). Overall - simple install and easy IR/RF remote "learning" capabilities - works great for Google Assistant voice commands for your not-smart IR and RF devices, particularly if your desired voice commands are all focused on your BL-enabled devices Suggestions - more standard device types (e.g. "receiver" wasn't a listed type which means I had to create a custom type which then isn't available in Google Home app, though still works fine for voice commands) - more options available to control devices directly from within Google Home app (not just voice/assistant) - better suggested remotes to reduce having to "learn" them all manually -support more RF frequencies (only the 2 which seem most common are supported so check your devices before buying)

Broadlink to the rescue of a Denon Zone 2 setup!
The main component of our home theater is a Denon AVR-3700 which features Alexa support. What it does not support is Alexa to control Zone 2. The AVR-3700 (and models larger) support digital output (HDMI) to Zone 2. In my instance, I have speakers and a tv in our patio - and this receiver supports that quite well. What I could not do was to turn it off and off through Alexa - which requires finding the Denon remote. After countless searches through websites and Reddit threads, I saw this device mentioned - but could not find if it did actually work. I took a chance and bought the device. It took a bit to figure out how to get it to record a remote control button from the original - but once I did, BINGO! I was able to record the power button (toggles on/off) for Zone 2. I eventually added a few additional commands as the Denon skill cannot always find the receiver, but this thing just works. When I added the other functions (input to Aux, input to Media Player), I needed to unlink and relink the Broadlink skill. This was a lot cheaper than trying to find an Alexa compatible receiver with Alexa support for Zone 2!

Getting there but not quite where it needs to be
I really wanted these to work and was hoping to finally integrate IR and RF devices into one app and have this as part of home automation. Sadly the limitation of only communicating with 2.4GHz router rendered this nearly useless. There are ways to try and trick it to work with modern day MESH routers such as Google Home/Nest or others but it requires one to basically run a cord way outside the house to hopefully only connect see a 2.4 single and not 5 GHz. The interface clearly was written by someone for whom English was a second language as others have noted. It can be setup for most devices but plan on spending hours to get this to work somewhat like you hope. There seem to be features to perform multiple functions together (aka scenes) but the documentation is limited. I was hoping to have a clean interface to control my home theater (tv, connected devices, audio) and it did control those but it is no better than a Universal remote. You have to jump from one device to another in the app to change channels, control the volume... Turns out my GE universal remote for home audio is actually more convenient. I was also hoping that I could input a device (TV, soundbar...) and all of the devices remote control functions would be supported. The basic functions are there but anything out of the ordinary does not appear to be sorted. For example my Sony soundbar remote has buttons for different sound audio types (voice, music, sports...) none of these functions are directly avaiable and while I might be able to manually control all of those features by teaching this to learn those functions, for me it was not worth the hours of effort it would take to teach this controller all of my remotes capabilities. If this allowed you to add a specific device by manufacturer and model number (note here that everything to be added for control is called an "appliance" and not "device") and if it allowed you to logically control home theater from a single screen this would be useful. Perhaps the RM10 pro will finally get this right but I suspect my wish list will take a long time to achieve for this company.

Universal Remote for TV and Fan
Why did you pick this product vs others?: I set up this universal remote in my living room to control a bunch of things that use IR and RF remotes, like the TV, ceiling fan, and an old stereo. The device itself is small, so it fits easy behind the TV. The first step was connecting it to my Wi-Fi, and I had to make sure my phone was on the 2.4 GHz network. The app walked me through the steps and it didn’t take too long. For my TV and fan, I tried the preset brands first, but they didn’t match, so I used the learning mode. I just pointed my regular remote at the device, pressed the button, and the remote copied the command. I did this for the buttons I use the most. It also works with my smart speakers. I made a few voice commands, so now I just say what I want, and the TV turns on or the fan starts. The app lets me put all my devices together, and I can set up different scenes, like turning everything off when I go to bed. I still keep my old remotes in a drawer just in case, but I haven’t needed them much. This makes my setup less cluttered.

En principio me costó decidirme por su precio, quizás puede parecer un poco elevado. Tras probarlo, cambié de opinión, porque lo cierto es que se nota que la calidad de los materiales con la que está construido está hecho para durar. En mi caso lo utilizo para controlar a distancia la televisión, el aire acondicionado, la campana de la cocina, la persiana de la cochera... Como se puede apreciar tiene muchas aplicaciones y te ayuda a tener todo el hogar controlado a distancia. Además, su integración con Alexa es perfecta, muy fácil de configurar e intuitiva. Lo recomiendo a todos mis amigos

Endlich die eierlegende Wollmilchsau-Fernbedienung
Im Zuge der Einrichtung einer Sprachsteuerung mit Alexa bin ich erst über den Logitech Harmony Hub und dann über den Broadlink RM4 Pro gestolpert. Beide Geräte habe ich ausprobiert und letztendlich am Broadlink hängengeblieben. Im Folgenden möchte ich gerne meine Erfahrungen mit beiden Geräten mit den Nutzern Teilen, die vor der gleichen Entscheidung stehen. Einrichtung Beide Hubs benötigen einen Account und eine Einrichtung per App. Wer sich davor scheut, kann hier aufhören zu lesen, denn ein unabhängiges nicht Cloud basierendes System habe ich nicht gefunden. Beide Systeme brauchen einen Account und müssen immer am WLAN Verbindung in die Cloud haben, sonst funktionieren sie nicht. Die Einrichtung ging bei beiden Systemen problemlos. Reichweite Logitech hat meines Erachtens ein bisschen besser Signale ausgesendet. Die Geräte im ganzen Raum wurden etwas zuverlässiger angesteuert als beim Broadlink, aber auch der macht seinen Job echt gut, Steht bei mir unterhalb des TV Gerätes neben dem Fuß und hat selten Probleme ein Gerät zu erreichen. Logitech bietet zusätzlich aber Kabelgebundene Sender an, die man in Schränke verlegen kann, damit auch bei geschlossenen Türen Geräte geschaltet werden können. Da das bei mir nicht der Fall ist, war das kein Argument für mich Die Funkreichweite geht bei mir auch über 3 Zimmer übergreifend. Kompatibilität Hier unterscheiden sich beide ziemlich und hier ist die Frage, was braucht man eher. Beide können natürlich IR Signale senden. Hier gibt es keinen Unterschied. Darüber hinaus kann der Logitech Hub aber Bluetooth Geräte ansteuern, wie beispielsweise die Playstation. Das kann der Broadlink Hub nicht, der kann dafür aber Funksignale ansteuern und lernen, was Logitech nicht kann. Damit können beispielsweise alle herkömmlichen Funksteckdosen oder Markiesen, Garagentore und Rolläden, die Auf Funk basieren, angesteuert werden. Das war ein absolutes Entscheidungskriterium für mich, da ich verschidenene Funksteckdosen im Einsatz habe und diese weiter nutzen kann. Zwar habe ich auch eine Playstation, dafür habe ich aber einen Workaround gefunden. Vor einigen Jahren habe ich eine One-for-all Fernbedienung gekauft, die einen IR-Bluetooth Wandler zum Steuern der Playstation dabei hatte. Dieser ist eine weitere kleine batteriebetriebene Box, die IR Signale empfängt und als Bluetooth Signal an die PS weitergibt. Und genau die habe ich mit der Broadlink Hub verbunden und kann damit jetzt sowohl IR als auch BT als auch RF Signale steuern. Gerätekompatibilität Logitech hat im erkennen der Geräte klar die Nase vorn. Fast alle Geräte waren in der Datenbank zu finden. Lediglich ein paar Exoten musste ich einzeln teachen. Broadlink hat hier öfter das Teachen benötigt, was mich aber nicht störte, da ich für meinen Zweck der Alexa Sprachsteuerung ja nur eine Übersichtliche Anzahl Befehle benötigte. Im Endefffekt konnte ich aber alle Geräte gut einbinden. Ab und Zu ist die Funktion weg, dann hilft es die Broadlink App zu starten. Meist sind die Geräte offline. Durch einmaliges Anklicken werden sie aktiviert und dann geht auch der Sprachbefehl. Es kommt immer mal vor, dass Sprachbefehle von Alexa zwar verstanden, aber scheinbar nicht weitergeleitet werden. Das hatte ich aber gleichermaßen bei beiden Geräten. Verbinden mit Alexa Das Verbinden mit Alexa funktionierte bei beiden Geräten sehr einfach über das Installieren des jeweiligen Skills. Logitech hat tatsächlich mehr Fähigkeiten. Zum Beispiel kann hier tatsächlich die Senderliste eingegeben werden und dann der Kanal direkt gesprochen werden. Das geht bei Broadlink nicht so gut. Ich habe zwar auch hier versucht mit programmierten Aktivitäten das gleiche zu erzielen, aber funktioniert hat es nicht. Nach einigen Versuchen hatte ich das Gefühl, dass Logitech mehr Schwierigkeiten gemacht hat und öfter die Befehle nicht mehr verstanden hat. Bei Broadlink habe ich mich auf einfache Befehle beschränkt und meist funktioniert es gut. Preis: Broadlink kostet knapp die Hälfte und das bei für meine Sicht mehr Leistungsumfang. Logitech spielt seine Stärke erst aus, wenn man es mit einer Logitech Harmony Fernbedienung verbindet, dann kostet das Paket aber locker nochmal 100€ mehr. Für meinen Zweck war das nicht relevant. Szenarien/Aktivities: Stärke der Systeme ist ja das man kombinierte Aktionen programmieren kann, also das beispielsweise mit dem TV Gerät auch die Soundbar mit angeht und das Licht gedimmt wird. Hier ist Logitech zwar stärker als Broadlink, aber genau an dieser Stelle ist auch das größte Problem, das mich im Endeffekt von Logitech weggebracht hat. Es gibt keine Möglichkeit bei Logitech Szenarien so einzustellen, dass sie nur ein Gerät betrifft. Man muss immer für alle Geräte den Zustand vorgeben. Klingt erst einmal verwirrend, aber am Beispiel erklärt wird vielleicht das Problem klar: Befehl 1 : TV an = TV ein, Soundbar ein --> alles OK Befehl 2 : LED Ambilight an = Ambilight ein , TV und Soundbar bleiben an --> alles OK Befehl 3 : LED Ambilight aus = Ambilight geht aus, TV und Soundbar gehen mit aus --> Nicht OK Es gibt aber tatsächlich keine Möglichkeit nur ein Gerät auszuschalten und alle anderen so zu lassen wie sie im Moment sind. Zwar gibt es versteckt in den Einstellungen solche Möglichkeiten, aber bei keiner hat es funktioniert. Und ich habe jedes Forum durchsucht und jede Kombination an Einstellung probiert, doch nichts wollte das Ausschaltproblem lösen. Habe ich die Klimaanlage ausgeschalten ging der Fernseher mit aus. Habe ich den Staubsauger ausgeschalten dann ging Fernseher oder Klimaanlage oder Licht auch aus. Wahrscheinlich hätte ich jetzt für jede mögliche Kombination ein eigenes Szenario mit eigenem Namen programmieren können, aber die Permutation von 6-7 Geräten mit jeder Kombination von an und aus hätte man sich nicht merken können. Bei Broadlink kann ich jedes Gerät separat ein und aus schalten, ohne das die anderen betroffen sind. Daher habe ich mich letztendlich dafür entschieden. FAZIT Das An-Aus-Problem von Logitech war das größte Problem bei meinem Anwendungsfall. Darüber hinaus war die Fähigkeit Funksignale zu senden für mich ein absoluter Mehrwert bei Broadlink. Dazu kam noch der Preis von unter 50€. Alles in allem bin ich sehr zufrieden mit der Entscheidung.
