From the Artist I was born in New York City to Stuart and Helene Mentzel (no that's not a spelling mistake). I took out the t because everyone always pronounces it wrong. Now it's like Menzelle - like French, but not. We moved from Queens to New Jersey but by the 2nd grade we settled in Woodbury, Long Island, where I lived until I went to NYU. I always knew I wanted to sing. I was 5 and in summer camp where we were singing "Cat's in the Cradle" and I was somehow harmonizing by accident; all of the counselors made a big deal. Later I brought down the house in this talent show where I performed "The Way We Were" with the biggest Long Island accent you've ever heard (I'm still made fun of today for that). Coincidentally, in the 5th grade I was Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" and Mabel in "The Pirates of Penzance" - the latter was pretty challenging for elementary school. I went to a voice teacher when I was 8 and I sang some songs from "Annie" and she said I was screaming so much that she didn't want me to hurt myself, so she took me on. By the time I got to Syosset High School, I was cast as 60-year old nettie in "Carousel"; our director felt that my voice sounded the most mature. At that time, I was studying classically with Mr. Arnold but found myself wanting to listen to and imitate R&B singers: Aretha, Chaka Kahn, Etta James and the list goes on. Instead of working at the local delicatessen, I auditioned for a wedding band, lied about my age and got hired as the lead singer. I had to buy a black cocktail dress and learn everything from jazz to rock to motown. I started writing my own songs and when I got to NYU, I focused less on class and more on trying to get a record deal and keep my own band together which isn't a very easy thing to do when you have very little money and no name. Then on a whim, I auditioned for a show called "Rent" which I thought would fit perfectly into my calendar being that January and February are slow months for weddings. But that year, December 1995 New Year's Eve was my final wedding gig at the Four Seasons in Philly. "Rent" went to Broadway and I had a new, wonderful family. The show allowed me the opportunity to record my own album and tour with it. I played at Lillith Fair, started working on a second album, got dropped by my record label, cried a lot and then went right back to the theater where I have always felt so comfortable. I was in a fabulous show called "The Wild Party," by Andrew Lippa and got to be on stage with my (now) husband whom, as some of you may know, I met in "Rent." Since then I 've been trying to go wherever the water is warm; whether it be music or theater or film, I'm just trying to do what I love. One day I heard about a new musical based on the book "Wicked", so I put on green lipstick and smokey black eye shadow and went to audition for the green girl. I got the project and I've been working on it ever since (almost 3 years). And now I 'm living in one of the sweetest times of my life. Just the sweetest. Thanks for caring. xoxo, Idina. Review: BETTER THAN THE 1ST!! - HERE - BY IDINA MENZEL IS A MUCH BETTER CD THAN THE FIRST ONE. DON'T GET ME WRONG, THE 1ST CD IS GREAT, BUT THIS IS BETTER!!! At Long Last... More Idina!
I have been eagerly awaiting Idina Menzel's next CD since Still I Can't Be Still came out. Her clear, soulful voice makes me laugh and also has tugs at the heartstrings -- clearly this girl is a Broadway girl. The six songs featured on this EP offer just a taste of what Idina is capable of. I'm familiar with a couple of songs from live performances that Idina has done and am pleased to see they made the cut. There are only two factors that prevent me from rating this CD a full five stars. First and foremost, after all this time, I was hoping for a full-length album. So I'm a bit disappointed. Secondly, the songs don't have the same professional sheen that SICBS did. It's also clear that this is a happier, more settled Idina. There are no dark, scary songs like Larissa's Lagoon here. All in all, I'm thrilled to see another Idina CD for sale... but it makes me want more. Here's hoping she doesn't wait another five years to release an album! Aaron Mullins

Another masterpiece
Idina Menzel's new release proves to have a new, more uplifting tone than her debut, "Still I can't be Still." However fans of her original work will find this piece pleasing. Idina has a new, brighter sound and a more simple band behind her, that basically consists of acoustic basses and guitars along with the piano, and ocassinally some simple percussion. Once again, uses beautiful lyrics, drawn from life experience and real situations in her songs. The melodies are soothing, and show a soft side of Idina's voice. Her voice complements the music beautifully, and we see that she is capable of more than just belting. One thing that makes this cd so touching is Idina's ability to portray emotion in her voice. While listening to songs like "Here" and "If I told You" one couldn't help but feel a bit lifted. Fans of the self-deprecating lyrics showcased her debut album will be able to find the same attitude in "Penny." And while Idina has a new unique sound on this album, it seems more accessible to the mainstream, and one is guarunteed to find something on the album that will make it worth buying.

This is such a great CD
I bought this CD from the Gershwin Theater over a year ago, right after a performance of Wicked, and it's been in my CD player almost constantly ever since. Its something that you can listen to and enjoy and even relate to. Her voice is amazing, and not at all over powering or intimadating to all of us who love to sing along in the car. And you wont need to skip any songs, because they just all flow so well together. The song "You'd be suprised" is beautiful and touching and just lovely. And "Beautiful" sounds as thought it has come straight from her heart. While this isnt a CD i'd recommend for dancing around in your kitchen, it's good to listed to over the iPod while your cooking...or just driving home from work to relax.

Unbelievable voice, and she wrote all the songs to boot...
I just returned from a trip to New York where I had the distinct pleasure of enjoying a performace of Wicked. I'd bought the soundtrack prior and listened many times in anticipation, but it didn't hit me until I saw the show live how absolutely amazing Idina's voice is. "Here" is further proof of her unbelievable talent. While her gigantic voice brought tears to my eyes during Wicked, this brilliant and all-to-short set of tunes proves she has an equally emotional softer side. I eagerly anticpate this wonderfully talented woman's next (and hopefully longer) release.
