I have a 308 upper receiver that I would like to complete building. Will I be able to assemble the barrel using this vise? Is this a heavy duty vise?

i dont understand why you would need a heavy duty vise to work on a 308 rifle..but.. for pressing roll pins or sleeves.. this vise will work great. as long as your work doesnt need more than 2 1/2 inches or so. the vise opens 3 inches max . very small , light duty vise.. only weighs a few pounds.

Can I use magnetic vise jaws on this clamp?

No, There are no hole is the jaws to hold the pads.

The title says "3 inch". What is "3 inch" about it? What does it apply to?

3 Inches is the width of the jaws. These jaws can 'open' to maximum 2 Inches to clamp/grab materials up to 2 inches thick (though I have clamped up to almost 2 3/4 inches thick material). so according to the manufacturer, the Jaws WIDTH is 3 Inches and Jaws CAPACITY is 2 inches

Will this be strong enough to hold an upper receiver for ar15 to install a free float rail?

I've held rifles in place for simple changes in front and rear sights on my rifles, BUT I needed two of them--one on barrel and one on stock. Plus, I bought plastic inserts along with soft, stick-on floor protectors to ensure no damage to my rifles.
