Q: Is there something that you can't see in the photo that makes the connection? Looks just like a hollow ring - not sure how it works?

It doesn't need to make a connection. It just needs to make the length of the tube longer so that 2 C batteries fit. (They're longer than one rechargeable battery.) It uses the original connections.

Q: does this fit on the bottom battery opening, and then the existing cap still screws ont it? i have the 71050, is that the same structure?

It will work with the 71050. It goes on top of the the handle replacing the wall plug. This allows you to replace the rechargeable battery with two C cell batteries.

Q: Is this a hollow ring with just the threads to connect the upper & lower pieces? If so, how do the contacts work?

It uses the original contacts. Adding the ring makes the length of the tube longer so that 2 C batteries fit. (They're longer than one rechargeable battery.)

All you need is the extender ring and two size C batteries (which you buy separately) to change your Welch Allyn Otoscope from "rechargeable" to "uses C batteries."
