Q: I would like to replace the halogen bulb with a color changing led bulb. has anyone ever done this? it would be the spabright color changing led.

The bulbs in these lights are a small base halogen bulb. A color changing light has a circuit board in it. If you want a color changing led spa light you will need to buy a color changing led spa light. You can buy led bulbs for the bigger lights but they are really expensive and kinda crumby in comparison to the real led fixtures. I'm a pool professional.

Q: Will this be a direct replacement for my american products 981-11300 fixture.

There is a clip on the bottom and a pilot screw on top. Most are standard except for some Hayward lights that use a 2 screw method. I've used light wedges to hold lights in niches that don't have the clip and screw method. Light wedges are made by pool tools and have helped me out of some jams.

Q: is a transformer required for this light? if so which one?

No transformer needed. The light is 120volt A.C..

Q: is this light 6in round and 4.5 deep

It is 6"'s in diameter and slightly deeper than .5 (.67). Be sure and get the right length on the cord and also check the pool receptacle to ensure that the receptacle can accept the two screws that hold the light in.
