This Book Taught Me How to Paint
A lot of the projects in this book may seem simple (although I thought the canyon one was the most challenging), but they teach you invaluable skills that allow you to figure out how to paint a subject without constantly having to resort to a tutorial. I was getting nowhere with Youtube tutorials because I was mimicking what the artist was doing and not actually learning WHY the artist was doing what they were doing. Plus, it was very annoying having to pause the video and rewind it to keep up. I even tried one painting that utilized the concept of glazing, but I didn't actually learn anything about glazing and just how useful it actually was to creating a blended look without beating the clock while the paint is still wet.In comes this book, and I learned more about color theory and painting techniques than I ever did even reading a book on color theory. I learned loads about glazing and how to take advantage of it so that I didn't have to rely on a retardant to keep my paints wet for longer. I love that as the book progresses, it becomes less hand holding and encourages you to look at the final product and figure out how to make your piece look like that. And that part about color theory? The book encourages the usage of a handful of paints for every piece, paints you learn how to mix in a variety of ways. You do it so much that you start to understand black and yellow make green and unbleached titanium white both lightens and desaturates a color. This book gives you the basic tools to eventually go on and paint something without relying on step-by-step instructions.

Very beginner friendly acrylic painting book!
This book is a great place to begin learning to paint in acrylics. It really is for someone who had never painted before like myself. The design of the book is simple. It doesn't require many brushes or a lot of different paints making it an affordable way to begin. It is explained in the book on what to buy in general and, in turn, prevents a lot of wasteful spending on unnecessary stuff. Also the small canvas panels for practicing are cheap and don't require tons of paint to finish a painting. As for using this book, learning from mistakes is a lot easier because the paintings are simple in their design. This is especially true since each lesson contains written steps with a completed picture for each step(really helpful in learning to mix paint and match colors). New techniques are introduced to the paintings as you progress through the book as well. It also doesn't seem like a chore to do these paintings. Sometimes I paint the same picture again the next day just to improve further or just for fun. Since it's affordable overall, making mistakes and realizing I need to start over doesn't feel so bad or costly. It also makes painting more relaxing. I will be buying the accompanying book after I finish this one for certain! One other thing, I bought an extra tube of titanium white so that I can paint over my practice paintings and then reuse the canvas panels. It's convenient to have when you're "out" of panels. One panel can go a long way and doesn't have to be thrown away when something goes wrong or you want to start over.

Great family activity
We have loved this carefully written book. The projects are each about 1 hour long with all the drying time. The instructions and illustrations are excellent. This is the 2nd version this artist has published, and I like it more than the first. He simplified the supplies needed and the actual projects. It is so rewarding to see each painting come to life with a few simple details. He also encourages you to not get too hung up on fine points, just keep working and you will learn the skills and improve with each painting. They are quick enough to repeat one if you just feel you lost control of a project for some reason (spilled paint, sister knocked your arm, etc. ). I highly, highly recommend this book if you are intimidated by the thought of painting. I also recommend getting a multi-pack of 5x5 canvas boards and a stack of multi-media thick art paper.

A Perfect Learn-to-Paint Book!
I've been painting for a few years.....high-brow oil painting (high-brow because the paint costs so much, but covers so beautifully). But for family vacation, I needed a project I would enjoy that wouldn't take a fortnight to finally dry to the touch. Decided that I would share this project with the adults and teenagers....and bought this book to help them find something "easy" and "do-able". Also bought a 24 set of acrylic Arteza paints, Arteza paint brush assortment and some little Arteza 3 inch canvases with little wooden easels (note that I really like the Arteza brand). Invested about $80. But WAY cheaper than 14 people paying a "paint night" fee for an acrylic adventure.....and WAY cheaper than sharing my oil paints. What I discovered is that it is impossible to get teens away from the heroin in their lives (their cell phones), and that decent acrylic paints can be just as enjoyable to use as oils. And this book taught me that (the acrylic part, not the teen heroin part). Following along with the instructions for each painting presented, was eye-opening. I learned new tricks and was happy with each outcome. Some of the subjects for the paintings were not things I would ever "want" to paint, but I will do them all just for the learning opportunity. I highly recommend this book!

Good starter book
Good, fun and easy way to learn about acrylic painting on a small scale. Firstly the book starts with an overview of painting, especially with acrylics, covering color equipment and others. Next is the projects and learning aspects of these 50 small paintings - putting on paint, light and shadow and interpretive approach. Each technique is shown on one page with other practice designs in similar style depicted. Each painting teaches a new effect with acrylics.A fun book .
