Are the buckles loud when they click together? I'm wondering if this would be appropriate for church.

I don't think it's particularly loud when playing with the buckles. But when the buckles hit the wooden pew....then it might be a bit loud. There are probably better toys for church but this is awesome for car rides. My son loves it and it's a great distraction when buckling HIM into the car seat. I would definitely recommend this toy.

Has the manufacturer remedied the sewing problem that many people have mentioned in the reviews?

I wasnt aware of a problem. It works great. No issues yet, and it was well used, but not abused.

How difficult is it to open the buckles? I’m hoping it’s an easy two finger pinch for a 1 1/2 year old.

Not overly difficult. Some are pinch and some are twist to open. Our daughter loved it and it helped keep her occupied on a several hour flight
