Men's Second Shift Soft Toe Work Boot

I got these boots two years ago, just conditioned them for the first time, and they're still going strong. I got them a full size down from my usual (10.5) and they fit well out of the box, now they've become very comfortable. Over all this is a great value, sturdy leather work boots for less than $100 is hard to beat, and I'll buy another pair if mine ever give up the ghost.

These boots are great! They fit perfectly on my 30.5 cm (12 in) feet, with enough room for thick socks.

Like many other comments posted on here, I wear boots all the time to work, and finding a good pair can be something of challenge. What's even more annoying is that once I find the perfect pair of boots, they can't be found when time comes to replace them. Either the manufacture stopped making them or they decided to improve upon it, completely changing everything I originally liked about them. I'm still breaking in the boots, so I might update this review in a few months with how they are doing. Right off the bat, I have some like to bring up a few items of concern, which results in my rating of these boot being a 4 instead of a 5. - Shoe size is a little big. This mainly because they do not sell half-size shoes after size 12. I'm a 13.5 wide, and my shoes range anywhere from a 13W to a 14M. Never really know which size will be just right until I try them out. So, I bought a 14, knowing full well that they will either not fit perfect, or be a little big. - Toes are tilted up. This is the first time I've ever purchased boots with the toes tilted up, and found them to be rather off putting the first couple of days. But then I thought about it a bit more, and realized that most of the soles on my boots tend to break/crack right where the toes bend. CAT's decision to design these boots with the toes tilted up, might have been to prevent this type of damage. - Tops of boots are loose. Laced up tight, the top of the boots are still loose, and being to rub up against my skin. I tried like crazy to tighten them to a snug fit, but either I can't because of its design, or I still need to break the leather a bit more in order to tighten to a snug fit. This isn't been an issue with my thick winter socks, but my thinner summer socks do not provide enough cushion to prevent the boot from rubbing against my skin as I walk around. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm still breaking these boots in, so my rating may change over time. UPDATE: Jan 12, 2015 - +9 months and the boots have held up to the light wear and tear I've given them since I've purchased them. These are primarily used for indoor office wear, so the most stress I put them through is my daily climb up and down six flights of stairs. Boot I own previous to these dies within 2-months of this regime, so I really like these CATs. The toes haven't leveled/flatten out, so it still feels like I'm walking on tip toes. I barely notice the slight bent/tilt anymore. As for the lacing issue I mentioned in my previous review, this continues to be an issue with them, especially since I've lost an additional 10-punds since I purchase these. Now that the leather is a bit more loose, I'm able to tighten the boots to the point where the holes are on top of one another, but they still fit loose around my ankles. Overall, my rating has not changed from my original 4-stars.

Strange boots, and that's from a former Marine that's worn boots (and knows his boot size) for close to 40-years now. That said, here's how the order went and the boots fit. The order was supposed to deliver by the 5-7 day mark, I took delivery of them on the 14th day after they were ordered. Definitely NOT impressed with the 'WesternWear' dealer for these. As for the boots (which is the ONLY basis for the 3-star rating on the product), I wear an 11-M or 'D' US size, and is what I ordered. The width fit perfectly, and the length wasn't bad either. Give-or-take, the length-and-width were on-size. Now, about how they DIDN'T fit. Unless your feet are only 1/2-inch tall from floor to top of metatarsal, you cannot get your foot into them! I put my right foot into the boot half way (with no laces in it) and right at the point where the tongue is sewed to the upper-leather, it was so tight (and I did force my foot into them, to see if it was just a first-fit issue), that I liked not to have been able to remove them! When I did get them off, a huge purple mark was on the top of my metatarsal at the same location as the tongue-to-upper seam. I've NEVER had this fit issue with any other boot I've ever bought (of the dozens I've had over the years). This is not 'a foot issue', or a 'wrong size issue', this is a 'manufacturer didn't cut the upper leathers correctly' issue. To prove this point, I took the new (not worn in public) boots to my local cobbler and had him take a look at them. I explained the problem, and after wetting them and stretching them almost a half-inch at the seam location, he was able to help me fit them perfectly. (his words, 'thanks, that'll be $25, and no they wouldn't have fit if I hadn't have done that - they did have a shaping problem). They now fit well, and are rather well built (triple stitching, reinforced toe stitching to sole, good leather thickness, good quality sole, etc.) - Just be prepared for (most likely) a trip to your local shoe repair store (cobbler) to have them stretched to fit, if you get them on-size L x W, unless you have one REALLY flat foot and don't plan on using a good thickness sock with them. I wouldn't buy these again for the fit issue, after all said and done, shipping times were horrible, and they cost over $100 with the added cobbler work on my end.

It is a rugged shoe that my husband uses for roofing; a pair lasts him about six months. It is comfortable, durable, and slip resistant on the roof.
