L. Sprague de Camp, Sci-Fi/Fantasy Prophet for Our Times and Beyond
We love L. Sprague de Camp, whether he's writing alone or with his colleagues. He speculates, wittily and gently on how socio-political-scientific attitudes in our own culture might play out, with a few tweaks in his fantasy worlds. Always an Entertainment. and he makes the reader look at familiar "givens" differently.

Uniqueness Squared!
All of the stuff by decamp I've read has been superb but this is a compilation of the best of his best! One of the most educational 'stories' I've ever read is his'Language for time traveler' because when we travel back to pre-iceage Europe or midaevel Rome, we expect to be able to use current American English.Languages change and adapt and DeCamp points this out.

I have always like the alternative history stories of Ray Bradbury
I have always liked the alternative history stories of Ray Bradbury. This is his precursor. Different tone, more development of the characters. Nostalgic for that period of time. Well worth the time taken to read it. Do it for the dinosaurs!

Beautiful Edition for Posterity
L. Sprague de Camp should need no introduciton, as one of the most influential Sci Fi/Fantasy authors of the 20th century. Most of the material here is available elsewhere, but usually in poor quality mass market editions. I particularly appreciate the inclusion of that alternate history classic of classics, "Lest Darkness Fall". This is a very high quality edition that could well grace any bookshelf, and is worth every penny.

As good as an athology gets
De Camp pretty much founded the Alternate History literary genre. These stories were groundbreaking in their time, and their wit and originality has not been surpassed.De Camp was a learned man and his research is exhaustive. I recommend "Balsamo's Mirror" to anyone who attends Renaissance festivals, and "The Wheels of If" to anyone who worships their Celtic roots.

time travel returns
Some of these stories I remember form my child/adolescent days do not wear so well, but some new to me - especially with a linguistic emphasis were intriguing. The verse wasalso a welcome addition.
