I already had a set but, with a plastic test jar and I wanted a glass test jar. This is it and I’m very pleased. It is much easier for my old eyes to read.

Got it on time and works like a charm

I started a batch of mead the same day I received this. Did the job it's made for and gave me a clear reading. The test vial doesn't have any measurement lines however, so it's very easy to overfill and hard to determine the right level for subsequent tests. I attempted to work around that by holding the hydrometer in the vial while I added my sample. My fingers slipped and dropping the hydrometer an inch or so into the vial was enough to shatter the tip, rendering both the hydrometer, and the sample, useless. So. It does do the job, but I only got one use out of it due to the delicate construction (the carelessness was mine, but the necessity for doing things the way I was, and the fragility are both functions of the design).

I bought this product to help get me started with mead making. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. It gives accurate and consistent measurements of specific gravity. The glass for the hydrometer is extremely thin and appears fragile, but I’m sure that is how it has to be made for it to work. Regardless, it comes with a really protective plastic case lined with styrofoam so I don’t think it would break. The hydrometer is also a little difficult to read because the lines are so small and close together, but again this seems standard and all of the other products I saw on Amazon so I think that’s just how they are made. Know that you pretty much will need to purchase a turkey baster to get test samples from your mead to the cylinder. I’ve really enjoyed this product and other than just waiting an excessively long time, it’s the only way to know when your mead is done fermenting. For what it is, I think it’s perfect and well made, and a good price compared to other options.
