Q: Is there a way to lock the spray so it doesn’t accidentally spray?

The flip top prevents it from being activated accidentally. I have carried one daily for years in my pocket and have never had an accidental discharge. I would be careful if I was dropping it in a bag like a purse with small objects that might get under the top. Carrying it like that would not be recommended anyway because the spray would be too hard to get to in an emergency. If you want to carry it in your purse clip it to the side or a pocket so it stays in one place that is easy to find.

Q: How easy is it to understand the spray direction and quickly deploy under stress? I see no indentations or tactile indicators on the canister.

very easy even under stress,there's a flappy lid on one side you slip your deploying (index) finger under and depress trigger. As near to a no brainer as you could get yet still prevent accidental discharge in pocket or purse.

They have quick detach keychains. Unsure about the expiration though

Q: Can you bring this on airplane as checked baggage?

I do frequently (15-20 times a year) and have never had an issue. Put it in a zip lock bag just in case.
