High quality vise
This product works great. Just what I needed for my drill press. I tried a cheaper Chinese brand before but it was nothing compared to this well made product. Quick and easy to set up, slides work great, strong clamping force. Highly recommend!

Expensive Import Fail
Wilton, a name you can trust, right? My American made bullet C0 is perfect. So I wanted more perfection and was willing to pay a premium to get it. I ordered the Wilton 11696 6-inch cross slide drill press vise, knowing it was made offshore, but expecting Wilton to manage the production such that the product met American manufacturing standards. Fail.A void in the base. A void in the cast nut. Top acme shaft beyond bent. Aluminum handles so fouled they don't turn. The two steel gibs, overlook the surface finish, twisted. The acme shafts loaded with burrs. All edges sharp, not broken. Of course the bearing surfaces need smoothing. But hey, for an extra hundred dollars, there is nice paint...Wilton if you are reading this: please get in touch with me as I want a top acme shaft that is not bent.

Poor production control - be prepared to spend an hour finishing the job for them
I have spent 20 years buying products (including tools back in the day) from China for very large global companies. This is the type of low grade sloppyness that China used to be known for (which is why we used to buy from Tiawan). The screws are covered in dirt, fine metal dust and particles and is very poorly machined with lots of sharp edges. So be prepared to disassemble and try not to cut yourself. Clean everything the way the factory should have done. Knock off the sharp edges and loose pieces of metal left from bad machining and re-assemble with an appropriate lubricant. When you get done you have a very workable product. For this price and out of a modern well process managed and quality audited Chinese factory I should not have to do any of this. They are buying cheap, selling above the value point this demands and expecting the customer to fix the rest. Just a bit better than Harbor Freight out of the box. Wilton used to be decent - this is disappointing, they can do better.

Wilton, not what it used to be.
The vise feels pretty good overall, smooth movements after a little adjusting. Knobs feel decent, paint seems to be pretty heavy duty. One major issue I found is a very obvious casting void that was apparent after the ways were machined. Luckily for me this vise will just be going on my drill press to be abused, but if you’re looking for something of quality i would look elsewhere. If things like this can make it through their QC process they just aren’t what they used to be. I’ve got an 30+ year old bullet vise that I love, but since Wilton switched to overseas I can’t say they are any better than the cheaper alternatives. Overall the vise will work for my application but not what should be expected from Wilton.
