Great for home or office use, buy the aluminum version for portable uses
With laptops, tablets, and portable PCs continuing to shrink every year, I have become reliant on USB hubs and network adapters to replace disappearing native ports on my devices. I have two USB hubs, two USB network adapters, and this device which is a hybrid between the two.I really like the three USB 3.0 ports and the Gigabit Ethernet are all available in this small package. The quality of the function are up to the standards of what I have come to expect from Anker, and I have had no problems once I realized I needed to install a driver. Actually, that is probably the one downside to this device, is that I needed to find and install a driver which is becoming almost a thing of the past as most devices seem to plug and play without user intervention these days. This next criticism is just a person preference of mine. If I were to purchase this device again, I would probably go with this aluminum one: Anker Unibody Aluminum 3-Port USB 3.0 and Gigabit Ethernet Hub with 1.3ft / 40cm USB 3.0 Cable [Ethernet Port RTL8153 Chipset + USB Ports VL812 Chipset ]. The reason is because I use this ( Anker Unibody Aluminum USB 3.0 to RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter Supporting 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet [RTL8153 Chipset ]) non-usb hub ethernet adapter at work and I like the solid feel of the aluminum a lot. I also like that the aluminum ones don't have a detachable USB cable, this combines with the solid feel of the device and gives the impression that it would be very difficult to break. The one I am reviewing here feels very light-weight, and you could replace the USB cable if it broke or you wanted a different length, so your preference may differ from mine.If I could make my own product, I would combine the two aluminum ones I linked above into a device with an Ethernet port and one single usb port in an aluminum body that is as small as possible. I understand this is unlikely as the existing chipsets come in multiples of four busses, and companies like to add those free/cheap extra usb ports and count them as features, but I only use the one USB port 99% of the time, and I would give up the two extras for a smaller package.---------------------Pros:*Fast speeds*Works great*Light Weight*Removable/replaceable USB cable*PriceCons:*I like the feel of the aluminum body ones better*Need to install a driverBottom Line:If this fits your needs it will work great. If you plan on this being portable with you and your device, I would buy the Anker Unibody Aluminum 3-Port USB 3.0 and Gigabit Ethernet Hub with 1.3ft / 40cm USB 3.0 Cable [Ethernet Port RTL8153 Chipset + USB Ports VL812 Chipset ] Anker Unibody Aluminum 3-Port USB 3.0 and Gigabit Ethernet Hub with 1.3ft / 40cm USB 3.0 Cable [Ethernet Port RTL8153 Chipset + USB Ports VL812 ChipsetAnker Unibody Aluminum USB 3.0 to RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter Supporting 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet [RTL8153 ChipsetAnker Unibody Aluminum 3-Port USB 3.0 and Gigabit Ethernet Hub with 1.3ft / 40cm USB 3.0 Cable [Ethernet Port RTL8153 Chipset + USB Ports VL812 Chipset

Works very well and does the job
Good:1. Liked that it simply works.2. USB and network speeds are fast.3. We bought two of them and each is working fine on two different laptops.Questionable:1. Cable that comes with it is stiff and the length is somewhat awkward to me. It's not long enough to position it far enough away to be out of the way, but it's too long for situations where you want it close by.

Sturdy and reliable USB Ethernet adapter.
Have used several of these USB ethernet adapters over the years. This one ranks at or neat the top. Ironically the reason I rated it 4 out of 5 for travelling is also the reason I suspect this unit will last longer than any other in the past. The detachable cable is needed if you are frequently connecting and disconnecting this unit, while also packing it. Most of the failures for past USB Ethernet devices is due to the cable fraying and breaking internally. With this, you can replace the cable or better yet, remove the stress of bending it sharply while packing it. In regards to compatibility, this unit works without drivers in Win10 and Linux so far. Have not tried in on MacOS yet, but I suspect the same will be true. Plug and play, no drivers, detachable chord and a small USB hub make this my new standard in USB ethernet devices. If they come out with a USB C version of this, will pick one of those up as well.

LIke the detachable cord, works instantly in Win 10, not quite so obvious in Win 7, but seems fine once you figure it out.
I have a new Dell laptop without a Ethernet port and was going to get one of those USB-to-Ethernet thingies, but saw this for just a few bucks more and decided to get it, since I like the idea that I gain USB 3 ports as the laptop I have only has one regular USB 3 port. Note that Anker makes a very similar aluminum version (obviously designed to complement a Mac) and thought about that but then I realized that the cable was captive at the device end, and seemed a bit fragile and that was a stopper issue. One of the things I like about this version, is that while it's black plastic and doesn't look 'cool' at all, it uses a detachable USB 3 cable (and comes with a one-foot one) so that there's no having to replace the unit due to cable or connector wear, and the cable is a very sturdy thing.I first plugged it into a Windows 7 machine, and the automatic install failed, which surprised me as these type of things have been around long enough that 7 rarely fails to find a driver. However, I saw something indicating that you'll see an extra CD drive on your computer and if you open that and run the installer, it will work fine. It did and that was that.I then plugged it into a Windows 10 laptop and it installed almost instantly, without my doing anything, and had a connection faster than I'd have believed. Thus far, I can't really tell how good the performance is one way or the other. It "seems fine" and I had no problems connecting a portable external hard drive to it even when the laptop was running on battery, though I wouldn't try that for too long. All in all, like other Anker products, it's worth the money. The only criticism I have is that until Win 7 is completely gone they should make it a little bit more obviously how to run the install.

Funny Story
This USB 3.0 HUB totally blew away my expectations. I'd never heard of Anker but decided to purchase due to all of the positive reviews. I'm totally glad I did!! I originally purchased this for use with my Dell Chromebook 13 to give it additional USB ports and gigabit ethernet. It was literally plug and play - working as soon as I plugged it in.So here's the funny story...I'm an IT professional and we had a pretty serious client service outage. We had determined one of their network switches had died in the night. After bringing out a replacement there were still several machines offline. It didn't make sense as the devices were plugged in to the new switch. After doing further troubleshooting I started to wonder if it was the network cards were the problem. I remembered I had this Anker Hub in my bag but I didn't have network access to download drivers (these were Windows machines) but I figured "What the heck I'll give it a try anyway." Amazingly once I plugged this in a new "USB Drive" showed up on the machine with the drivers on it! The hub includes its own windows drivers in a small USB partition! I installed the included drivers and the machine came right online! It turns out the building had been hit by lightning the night before and fried not only the switch, but several of the network cards plugged into it. This thing saved me at least an hour of troubleshooting and payed for itself in that moment.Needless to say I think this is a great product. It's very a well made and high performing device and I'll definitely be buying more Anker products in the future!
