Case and hinges are plastic with metal clasps. Set arrived on time but one of the hinges was broken. Seeing the hinges are just thin plastic they will have a limited useful life span as such I will just repair instead of asking for a new one. Pros - Blade clasps are all metal and hold the blade very securely - Blades seem to be made of good quality metal; sharp, plenty of different shapes and sizes - All but the large handle hand tool are metal – hollow metal tubing with finished ends which makes them very light. If you want them heavier fill the metal tubing with whatever you feel is appropriate – epoxy works best for me. Cons - Thin plastic hinges will break with extended use but they are snap-ins, as such are easily replaced with some imagination. - Sharpening stone is too coarse for precision blades – good for sharpening my axe however. For the price you will get a good set of blades and hand tools.

I looked under (taxidermy) on amazon.com found this item and thought it would make a Great gift for my step-niece that is just starting out in taxidermy. When I got the item about a half hour ago I opened the case to make sure everything was in order before I wrapped it for christmas morning; Im glad I didnt wrap it right when I got it. The bottom left blade holder (magnetic) had come unglued aswell as other blades from different places in the box had come unloose. In my opinion it was a good design had it been made well. However that was not the case , right after opening it there was a blade on the floor 1 inch from my foot, it would have made a very poor show at christmas morning. I will be returning the 48-piece hobby knife set and case.

Tools are fine but the case is a POS, menaing you cant kkep your blades organized.

I bought this for my husband's birthday. He is fairly new at wood-craving and I wanted to encourage him to do more. This set has a lot of different blades and a stone. I will say that the blade handles are somewhat narrow and that they are metal...but, my husband says that this is because this set is for detail wood-carving, as opposed to heavier cuts. For example, you'd use this set to put the details on a craved face or little bird, if you see what I mean. Anyway, he likes it and I couldn't ask for more!

I have never owned a hobby set like this one. It seems to have everything I need. The price was right also.
