Can anyone explain the difference between the new improved version and the older version? They both look identical.

The updated version is slightly larger - the vertical dimension is approximately 1 inch higher, the keypad buttons and fonts are roughly 1 mm taller and the platform for the handheld part seems slightly wider. You would have to get a better gauge to measure than the changes more accurately, I used a ruler and made only rough readings. The manual looks identical to me. The dimension in the comparison charts are misleading, I think they refer to the box size not the phone dimensions.

Does this phone need to be plugged into an electrical outlet?

Yes and No. You can still receive calls and make calls using the keypad if this phone is not plugged in but the display and voice mailbox functions will not work.

What is the difference between this new improved version and the other version?

Yes, there is just the color difference according to the company rep. Also there are two listings here for the white one, one says renewed in the title and the other does not but they are both renewed, black is new.
