Buy and read this book BEFORE you add a pet bird to your family.
This is a great book whether you know anything or nothing about birds. The author combines a great sense of humor and good bird ownership education in an easy read format. Thank you! It is too easy to "fall in love" with a colorful cutie and not have any idea what to expect when your cutie pie comes home with you. I got my parrotlet because she is small and quieter than most birds, but she is a total parrot Diva in a tiny package. I really wanted a "love sponge" so I should have gone with a cockatiel or budgie. I love my Calypso and would not trade her for anything! This book walks you through the total process, type of bird, what cage is best, everything! It is a worthy investment and serves as great reference material after your baby comes home.

Well written book for new bird people
Well written book for bird "newbies." It covers a lot of bases about birds in general, for anyone considering having a bird as a companion. There are a few things that I felt were a bit questionable or contradictory, but overall it's a good collection of basic information for anyone to know.

Good Book
I enjoyed this. Was trying to learn in order to get a bird as a pet and figured this would be good for general information. There certainly is a lot to cover. As it says it's for Dummies and that's me but I got a lot out of it.

Good book for a novice
This is a decent book if you know absolutely nothing about birds. I thought it would be more in depth, especially concerning a birds diet. You can find more info by searching Google. If you're totally new to birds then you might like this book. If that;s the case, buy this book before getting a bird.

Serves the purpose
The title says it all. The book is a primmer, supplies basic info for the fledgling bird owner/ buyer. Could it be better? Probably, but, it serves the purpose. Yes I do recommend this book.

Great Reference Book
My avian vet suggested this book. I have two birds and am somewhat of a novice. This book has a ton of information from selecting a bird to traveling with your bird, feeding, healthcare, and behavior. I recommend this book to all humans owned by a bird! It's concise, clever and easy to read. If you care about your avian friend, you should have a great reference book near-by, and this one is great.

Bought used and arrived like new. Exceeded my expectations as far as quality of the condition. As far as content it's in Dummies fashion, broken down in simple read sections. My child is able to read it independently and can understand what is expected when we get a bird

Full of valuable information
I was considering getting a Parrot with no previous experience of keeping a bird. I ordered this book and am so glad I did. It is most informative and helped me make an informed decision as to whether or not I was able to look after a parrot and indeed what type may be a sensible choice for a beginner.I find myself returning to the book quite often if there is something I need to remind myself about or if I just a question about what my parrot is doing or why he's doing it. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Can you potty -train your bird?
The answer to that question is YES, but not the way that is advised on page 122. This author would have a bird owner running around all day if the bird is out of its cage and if the bird gets left such as mentioned in this book and holds it in until the "word" to release is spoken is just completely impractical, inhumane and dangerous. It is certainly not amusing as this author implies.I have potty trained an African Grey, a Jardine's and a Green-cheeked conure but really they all got the idea and trained themselves to go to their relief stations and then back to me. Here is how I did it.I bought sturdy handle baskets (found mine at the Salvation Army thrift store ) put a weight in the bottom and covered that with newspaper cut to fit. These were placed at convenient places where the bird had easy access. To begin you have to watch and when the bird is indicating a deposit is imminent you put the bird on the handle of the basket and when the results are in you offer lots of praise and affection. The bird now has the ability to take care of itself and in the cases of my birds there were very few mistakes after just a few days.
