Battery life is good. I use Panasonic Eneloop rechargeables with great luck
I upgraded from the older 2000ish model. There were no longer maps available for that unit and memory was next to nothing. This is basically the exact same design with major upgrades. Tons of storage and fast processor. Battery life is good. I use Panasonic Eneloop rechargeables with great luck. Battery saver feature shuts off the screen and helps extend battery life. Bluetooth connects to my phone. Phone App from Garmin lets you share your location and real time movement to friends or facebook. Love that. These are some things I think are dumb. If you download PAID maps to the unit and it dies or you upgrade models the maps are not transferrable to the new unit. You have to buy them again. If you buy maps on memory cards then you can use them in any unit anytime. Here lies the bigger problem. The unit has one memory card slot. If you buy maps on an SD card that slot is now useless for additional storage. This bugs me. Overall it's a very rugged reliable gps...fast acquisition....easy to use. Highly recommend. UPDATE: I had to purchase the TOPO 24k maps on sd card namely because the trails were not accurate on the 100k topo map included or non existent and the topo 24k is routable as the 100k is not. Additionally the 24k maps are road routable as well... So you can use 24k maps to navigate city streets which is cool when you cell doesn't have a signal. Kind of a bonus. Been using this on the last dozen hikes I've gone on. Unit performs flawlessly. Extremely accurate. After you master the learning curve it's a pleasure to use. I've tested it side by side with an older 60 model and they are basically dead on the same. Make sure you update your firmware. I had an issue and had to reinstall the firmware to correct a miscalculation issue. Easy fix. Batteries last about 16 hours with the screen backlighting off. I've read the other reviews. Don't believe most of the gripes. Most are user error or misunderstanding of the features. Everything in the manual works for me. Highly recommend.

The GPS reception is amazing and the color display and buttons are easy to use. However the 100k topo is basically worthless.
I bought the 64st to replace my old Garmin eTrex Legend, which served me well for many years. The higher resolution, color display on this GPS is MUCH easier to read, and the navigation buttons are WAY easier to use than the essentially single-button interface on the eTrex. It takes a little while to get used to which buttons do what (admittedly I only glanced at the manual... ;) but it's fairly intuitive once you play with it a bit. My favorite feature however is the amazing reception. Unlike the eTrex, which requires a clear line of sight to the sky, this GPS easily captures many satellites even inside my house on the bottom floor, through the upstairs floor, ceiling and roof. Absolutely amazing. I expect this unit to perform much more accurately and reliably than the eTrex did when I'm riding my dirt bike for the dense woods of the Pacific Northwest. I use a RAM mount to attach the GPS to the handlebars on my bike, and purchased a hardened glass screen protector to prevent the display from getting scratched. I highly recommend both: RAM Cradle: RAM Cradle Holder for Garmin GPSMAP 62/64 Series GPS RAM Handlebar mount: RAM Mounting Systems RAM-B-149ZU Handlebar Mount Screen protector: (Pack of 4) Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Garmin GPSMAP 62 64 64s 64st, Akwox 0.3mm 9H Hard Scratch-resistant Protective Film for GPSMAP 62 62s 62sc 62st 62stc 64 64s 64st GPS PROS: + Reception is amazing + Nice color display + Buttons are easy to use CONS: - My only real complaint is that the 100k topo map is not really all that useful for PNW riding. I plan on upgrading to a 24k Topo map of the areas I ride. If you are considering buying this unit, I recommend saving a few bucks on the GPS itself and buy the plain 64 or 64s and spending that money on a Garmin 24k Topo map...or downloading one of the free, open-source 24k Topo maps that are available on the internet. .

User friendly right out of the box.
Hi everyone. I wanted to provide this review because I spent several months researching many different brands of handheld GPS units. My search pointed me in the direction of this particular unit, specifically the 64ST model. I bought this unit to use during my long-term position as a pipeline inspector. I use this unit everyday for more than 9 hours a day collecting various bits of waypoints and information that I later rely upon to direct not only work but also to identify items that need attention. Having this unit has made my job not only easier but more enjoyable. I would highly suggest considering purchasing a Micro SD card to go hand-in-hand with the unit especially if you plan on collecting various waypoints and other information. The 100K topo maps that come with the unit are sufficient for my use, but I can certainly see where the 24K topas would be much more beneficial to those needing more specific ground details. Overall, the unit has been very reliable, the battery use is really not that bad especially given the features of the unit. If I use the unit for 9 hours a day straight without turning it off only using two typical AA batteries I can easily get three to four days out of the batteries. Regarding signal strength, I have never dropped more than 1 bar below maximum (but do keep in mind, I am usually on an open area of ground with little to no tree cover, so take this point for its face value. In terms of the units user-friendliness, right out of the box I was able to completely utilize the unit with no learning curve issues. For those who may be wondering, I am not the most technical person out there however a general knowledge of electronics in conjunction with the quick start guide helps. Regarding the free trial of the bird's-eye Maps: I most definitely plan on renewing my subscription. While it is an extra cost on a annual basis I can tell you that having those Maps available and at your fingertips while out in the field make quite the difference. Overall, I would most certainly recommend this unit with no Reserves at all. Simply put, the unit is functional, reliable, compact enough, and all-around easy-to-use.

Outstanding Device but Outdated Base Map
I love the GPS. I've had it out hunting and hiking and it's great. For me, the only downside was that the maps Garmin loads on it are out dated. My neighborhood is about 15 years old but doesn't appear on the maps (purchased Dec 2019). It's really better suited for off road, but it was annoying that the maps didn't include the local roads. After some research I found that there are far better and current open source maps that can be found online, downloaded, and copied into the GPS for use in the field or on the road. The more you use this GPS, the more familiar you will become with it. There are a lot of features and the instructions are not detailed. YouTube videos will help. I bought this rather than a newer model because of the rubber buttons. I didn't want a touch screen for concern of messing something up by simply touching the wrong part of the screen. This has menus associated with all the buttons and if you accidently hit the wrong button, it's easy to back out before doing anything that will jeopardize your navigation.

Good solid gps
The unit and the amazon customer service are both excellent. The unit does everything plus some of what I need and hasn't lost signal on me yet the several times I've had it in the field so far which is all I can ask of it. I ordered a 32 GB micro SD card and am good to go for what I figure will be many years excellent build quality and finish. The birdseye and the topo maps are very helpful and easy to use and the basecamp program it all syncs up to on the computer works great. Plan out where you are going download the map send it to unit and head out. I'd recommend this gps to anyone needing a good solid unit for a reasonable price I've had cheaper ones that I've returned after one day the extra cost is worth it and necessary in my opinion if you do any kind of wilderness hunting or hiking, biking etc I'd put my faith in the unit not only getting me in easier and logging my trip but getting me home safely to my family. Only feature I haven't tested is the waterproof claim I'm sure it is it seems sealed up expect it to perform. Ordered Wednesday afternoon picked up at my local ups store Friday morning with prime next day shipping and had it to test on the hunting trip I had planed for the weekend. Buy it and enjoy.

Good piece of gear to have around, learned a good lesson after getting lost on a mountain.
Purchased this Garmin GPSMAP 64st unit after learning a hard lesson. Came down the wrong side of a 10,000 ft. mountain as sun was setting, turning a 11 mile round trip hike into 18, and also an all night event. Afterwards, I was in the market for a handheld GPS unit for emergencies, and one that would also give a topographic map. The Garmin GPSMAP 64st model definitely met what I was looking for, and has been an invaluable piece of gear. I've even taken it to Mexico where it was easily able to provide my precise location. Since I was searching for a GPS unit that I would consider emergency gear, it was important that it came with a water rating. This unit is rated at IPX7, meaning it can even be submerged briefly. Anything that can't get wet just shouldn't be counted on for an emergency. I did have a silicon protective case for the GPS as seen in the picture, but have since switched it out for an bright orange case for better visibility if dropped.

It's OK
I've been using this unit for several months now and I'm not really that wowed by it. It's accurate and does what a GPS should do, but I really should have gotten a touch screen type. First off, this thing eats batteries like no tomorrow. Especially when it's off. I use it one hunting trip for a few hours and turn it off with still near full battery life. Turn it on a couple weeks later and it's nearly dead. Good thing I use rechargeable batteries. Second, if you're like me, hunting, you're going to want a case for this. The Garmin case makes this unit hard to use. Harder to press the buttons and quite squeaky when pressing them. I've read that if you don't have the case, the lettering will quickly fade. The case it is then. I came from a Garmin eTrex 30 and this 64st is just more cumbersome to navigate. I can do it, but the eTrex was simpler and did what I needed it to. I bought this because I wanted something straight forward and not have to fumble with a touch screen not responding well enough if it rained. Honestly, I should've just took my chances with a touch screen. The topo map is hardly usable. Sure it works, but try usefully using it in the field on this little screen. Zooming in and out is a pain, particularly if you're used to using a smartphone. In fact, I'd rather use a smartphone. My smartphone. Even if it doesn't have topo on it. It's clearer and simpler to use. My advice is buy something simpler to use or save up and get a touch screen type.

This GPS is fantastic! I had a 60csx before until it broke
This GPS is fantastic! I had a 60csx before until it broke. I love that it's similar for it's ruggedness and durability. The menu functions are the same and everything. I love how the buttons are quite durable and not touch sensitive. I generally use this for geocaching, hiking, biking, and general get around when connectivity is an issue with my phone. Word of advise: You need Garmin Express on your computer to fully use all the functions and updates for this GPS. It's a free app. Also, you can connect this to your iPhone for notifications, exercise schedule, and just about everything you can think of. It does drain you phone battery, so, I only connect them when I am actually going to need to pair them. I also recommend using the Lithium Batteries with this unit because these ones last the longest with this unit, IMHO. This GPS is wonderful because it's very interactive with other devices and does exactly what you'd want it to do!
