Never had a chance to check them on a trail ...
Never had a chance to check them on a trail but what i know is that they are very narrow! Even more narrow than my previous 2.0 maxxis tyres.

Excellent tire, handles tough trails with no problem.
I am a weekend mountain bike rider. After wearing out the original tires on my Fuji I ordered these based off of the reviews. My first ride with these were at Ruston, LA's Lincoln Parish Park MTB trail. It's 10 miles of great trails. I was a little nervous "testing" these brand new tires on such a rough environment that at times would leave me miles from my vehicle should they fail.I was EXTREMELY happy with how these tires handled the trail. Through creek crossings, hills, roots, rocks, leaves and pine straw declines, inclines, etc. these tires handled it all wonderfully. I am extremely happy with the purchase of these tires. I had no problems at all. They handle the pavement well also (8-mile ride - no problems). Plus, I like the way they look on my white bike, the bold red letters look great.

Excellent tire: buy with confidence!
Replaced my 12 month-old Maxxis Sphinx tires with these new Maxxis Ignitors (26 x 2.1 folders). I carefully read several reviews from Amazon as well as other cycling sites, and I can tell you with absolute confidence that these are great tires. I rode Telegraph Road to Four Corners yesterday to test them out, and then rode a brutal Aliso Woods trail to Top of the World in Laguna Beach this morning with four buddies (26 miles in two rides). These tires performed well in soft dirt, hard-pack single track, and on the asphalt (but these are NOT asphalt or "road" riding tires). The Ignitors held-well in all conditions with zero slippage, even going up the brutal 650 feet of elevation in just one-mile of challenging Mathis Canyon. I will definitely buy these again when they need to be replaced. Update May 2014: still rolling on these tires and they are still in great shape and hold well on dirt trails. Very happy with purchase and will buy these again.

Holy Friction!!!
These tires aren't at all what I expected. I decided to upgrade the stock wheels on my bike and thought it wouldn't make sense to mount the well worn tires from my other setup on the new wheels. Mostly because I decided to go tubeless and also because I thought it would be nice to have a complete spare setup ready to go.My original tires were Specialized the Captain 2.0 rear and 2.2 front. They have plenty of grip, in fact more than I need with my riding style. I decided that I could sacrifice a little traction for less rolling resistance. My thought was to go to a narrower profile thus having less friction. So I ordered these in the 2.1 profile. So they are definitely narrower. In fact, quite a bit narrower than the 2.0 tire being replaced. This made me start to worry about traction. But then I thought, hey, less rolling resistance. Let's try 'em out before I get too critical about traction. They do have some knarly knobs on them. So I mounted them last night and took off this morning to try them out.First thing I noticed on my way up the asphalt road to the nearest logging road is that they howl like worn out mudders on a lifted 4x4 truck and feel like your pedaling through sand. Uh-oh. Then I thought, maybe they'll shine once I get off road. Don't give up hope yet. They did well on downhill section of some greasy clay single track stuff I went on and had plenty of traction for those conditions. But, other than that, I didn't like them. The narrow profile caused a lot of fishtailing off of loose rocks in the road and trail. This is really annoying on steep climbs and slightly spooky when bombing downhill. With all of the added friction and stability issues from the overly narrow profile, I'll be pulling these off and hoping that I can get even half of my money back from someone that will pick them up from me. They would be well suited for someone who does flowy singletrack stuff with gravity on they're side.Update 9/27/13: I kept them on a while to give them a chance to grow on me.It got better, but still not a fan. In fact, my old Captains are off of the old wheel set and on the bike. Out with the Ignitors. I'm not sure if they actually rolled faster after a little wear, or if I just got used to them. But they didn't seem as bad after a 50-100 or so miles. They shined in muddy conditions, but sucked hard in loose rock/gravel.

buyer beware
I am a content consumer, I don't speak up when quality doesn't exactly meet my expectations because I accept the fact that we live in a consumer culture that places emphasis on convenience and affordability while sacrificing quality. This is my first product review for Amazon (a frequent customer since 2010), since I don't get paid to write reviews, why should I waste my time? Unfortunately for Maxxis, I purchased the 62a 26x2.1 (which looks more like a 1.9) ignitor tire and set it up as my rear with an average pressure of 23 psi, tubeless (non-ust version) on a 2009 trek fuel. This particular ride was my fourth time on the tire with about 12 hours of use, on a packed dirt with small/medium rocks intermittently. I hit a rock about 20 mph denting (not bending) the side of my rim, and ripping a hole in the tire. There is now a half inch gash in the middle of the tire (along the tread next to the main middle tread which the sealant could not seal) rendering my bike inoperable. I do not appreciate having to walk my bike. I do not appreciate spending money on something that will fail that could jeopardize my life when riding down technical terrain. Do I trust Maxxis now? No. Do not waste your money (or life) on Maxxis, please opt to spend a little more for quality.
