Can i connect a tv to get sound on 4 speakers at once? how does the tv connect?

This is the 3rd receiver I have bought, in the hopes that it could be connected to the TV for surround sound. I have 4 BOSE speakers and a subwoofer connected to the receiver, and I have the TV connected with the optical cable, from the optical port on the back of the TV to the optical port on the back of the receiver. It does NOT work! There is NO optical option on the receiver, and if there is, I sure can't figure out how to access it. I contacted Pyle, they didn't help at all. The manual does not cover this and there are no buttons on the receiver face or remote that allow you to select "optical" so I really don't know how this is supposed to work with a TV.

can you hook a turntable to this
