Best economical air filter system for home use
We have 2 of these air purifiers and have had them for about 8 months. They really do work at removing dust. We don't sneeze daily anymore. And 10 year old daughter does not suffer from asthma anymore. We use a Honeywell charcoal pre-filter before the white paper filter and replace the charcoal every 3 months and vacuum the paper filter at that time. It really gets dirty on the charcoal filter, it gets thick with dust and dirt so we know it really does work well. We run these for 24/7 on high and never had any issues. They are worth the cost. But we do highly recommend the charcoal pre-filter as it really keeps the paper filter clean and helps with odor reduction.Took pictures today during 3 month charcoal pre-filter replacement. The 1st picture shows how much dust and pollutants the pre-filter trapped in 3 months. The 2nd pictures shows a new pre-filter after the 3 month replacement.

It worked well for a few weeks - not anymore
It worked well for about two weeks, and then it started emitting a burning smell. I am currently trying to get a replacement from Hamilton Beach, but the process is slow going since each email takes several days to get a reply.

excellent small, lightweight air filter
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. I am very pleased with this little air filter! It's incredibly lightweight. There are three settings - whisper quiet, medium, and full blast. When it's on whisper, you really truly can't hear it. Even when it's on the highest setting, it's not noisy - more of a white noise sound. I would recommend this as a white noise machine in a baby's room.I prefer this unit to my fancy, expensive "ionic" air filter. It's much smaller, quieter, and doesn't give the room a strange metallic smell like the fancy filter.Make sure you open the unit before you run it - the filter is covered in plastic, which you need to remove so it can function. I ran the unit for a week before I realized this. The video shows me changing the settings - you can see how quiet it really is. Pardon the cat.

Within weeks the filter was dark grey and disgusting. So I know it works
I was shocked at how much junk, fuzz, dust and more this air filter picked up. Within weeks the filter was dark grey and disgusting. So I know it works. I knew it was time to change the filter when the bedroom got a funky smell. Changed it and funky stank no more. I disagree that this filter can be vacuumed and reused. I have found I need to change it once a month at minimum. But since I don't want to purchase a new filter every month I discovered spraying with an air can will clean it nicely. And added bonus is that it works well as a white noise machine for nighttime and also cools the temperature in the bedroom (especially delightful if you like to sleep with the window open a bit even in the cold winter). It gets 4 stars because the seller keeps messing with the price. I purchased for $40.99 in August 2017 and today it is $71 (white). I had the black in my cart the other day and within a day the price went up $15-$20. I need to get an additional one so I will wait until the price drops. For the price this is the best air purifier I have found. It's a great buy for use in bedrooms/smaller spaces.

I'm a moron and have to tell you...
I've had this for two years. I let it run constantly in the laundry room where the litter box is, felt like it didn't work well, moved it and didn't think about it again for months. I decided to get it out again when pollen was bad, went to clean it first, opened it up and realized that I hadn't ever taken the plastic off the filter! Genius! No wonder it didn't work. So I started using it, it seemed to work ok, but not changing my life. I put it away. Again, decided to give it another go after a few months. I looked at the Amazon page where I bought it just to see if the reviews were still good or if I should order something new and...I'VE BEEN USING THE THING SIDEWAYS! I've had the air intake part on the ground this whole time (it's the flattest part, seemed logical). So, the moral of the story is that you should be smarter than me, and that if the motor on this thing can survive being run face down with the plastic on for months, it's probably pretty sturdy and deserves five stars.

My wife was looking forward to this since she has been dealing with allergies for a month and when she opened it yesterday, it was all broken pieces. Will definitely returning this defective product. They need to improve their packaging.

Less headaches, Air smells much better!
I was skeptical about this due to its reusable air filter. yea I can upgrade to a nicer air filter but I haven't felt the need. I live in an old house with a leaky roof that more than likely has a mold problem. I suffer from numerous headaches every week because I work from home in this environment. I've had this in my room for a month running around the clock at low/medium setting. Over the past month I've only had 2 headaches due to other issues not related to air quality. This has made a dramatic difference in my quality of life, though your mileage may vary. As far as sound goes, you cant hear low at all. Medium sounds like a regular desktop computer with 4-6 case fans and high sounds like a powerful fan. Personally i love the white noise, it helps me sleep. I keep this in a room where the door stays shut all the time and the air quality is noticeably different when walking into the room. I even turn it on high if i eat food in the room and it cleans out the smell of popcorn or whatever I ate from the air in maybe 10 mins.I would definitely recommend this if you're on a budget. More expensive air purifiers might be better though so if you can afford something more expensive then you might want to go for it. So far, I am very happy with my purchase

Died after 7 months - but warranty worked reasonably well
Bought this because the price dropped down to about $73 from $92 and the other reviews were good and I wanted to see if it would make a difference with stuffy nose/sore throats some mornings. I could see some heavy dust bunny formations and dust around the room, so in theory if this thing can reduce the crud floating around then it's got to make a difference for my air passages....?It's got a hepa-like filter - meaning it's not hepa class but its purpose in life is get rid of dust and "crud" as opposed to purifying the air around you like some units claim. My goal was simply dust elimination in the room.Unit itself is well built - the plastic felt reasonably decent. The switch on top also felt good during use, again didn't feel cheap. The air comes in the front (which is the darker gray plastic) and comes out the left side through some air vents. The air angles out to the left, so if you want the air blowing at you may have to arrange the unit at an odd angle. The vent itself is not adjustable which is too bad.It has three settings - the lowest setting is fairly quiet but there is audible "wind sound" which I don't find too loud for sleeping but if you're fussy about sound it might be a deal breaker. The middle setting is fine for waking hours and the fastest setting starts to border on being a little distracting - i think the idea is that you'd use the high setting for a short period of time to quickly clean out a room before entering it and turning down the speed. The filter itself feels relatively fragile - it can be cleaned and reused but I would exercise care in that regard. I can see that over time it would eventually come apart. I have not yet had to clean it but the instructions (which are brief, but adequate) are clear enough. The million dollar question: does it actually do anything? Maybe it's placebo but maybe it actually does make a difference. I've noticed less dust on beside tables and my nose/sinuses feel better. I can't say it's made a huge difference, yet, but I think it is helping. It won't clear out a big room but a small bedroom or office it should cope with.At $90-ish it's a bit pricey when you consider it's just a fan with a paperfilter at the front of it. At $70-ish it's a more reasonable experiment. I was loathe to spend a whack of money to test out something like this but for the money I've paid, the product I've received, and it's apparent performance I think it's a fair deal.So if you think you may have air quality issues (dust specifically as this doesn't kill mold, viruses, or bacteria) it's worth a try. I gave it 5 stars because it appears to be currently the best overall deal on Amazon for a small air cleaner.Update: about a month after purchase, I can indicate that the unit does indeed reduce dust on surfaces. Other rooms without it clearly get worse. I still don't know if it makes a health difference but clearly at his point it can only helpUpdate: October 30th. After about 7 months the unit just died. It has a year warranty, which I am about to try and use but I am very disappointed it didn’t even manage to last a year. I’ve had El Cheapo desk fans for $20 that have lasted several years before grinding down to their doom. I’ll update again once I’ve experienced the warranty service. When it worked, it worked well (originally 5 star). The paper air filter is as I’ve mentioned fragile feeling but I was able to clean it several times with a vacuum hose and it did manage to capture a fair amount of dust.Update Nov 11/17 - the warranty process was relatively painless. You goto their webpage, email support, send your contact info and a picture of your power cord to the unit cut and give them $10 for shipping and they ship you a new unit. Mine arrived within a couple of days. Hopefully, this unit lasts longer but I leave it on most of the time on low speed in the bedroom to reduce dust and as I’ve indicated above, it really does appear to work judging from the amount of dust that is on the paper filter. Raising the score back up.Update aug 4/18 - still going on the replacement unit. Also have a bionaire “egg” shaped air cleaner as well which is cheaper than this unit currently and has ion producing capability plus a blue glowing light that that can be turned off and on. Plus, it’s cheaper at this writing. Both seem to work about the same and are effective at getting rid of dust in a room. I prefer the bionaire mainly because it has the funky light and the shape but the Hamilton beach is a no bells and whistles, solid buy.Update October 27 / 2019: the unit is still working fine. Have cleaned it multiple times and it has had some remarkably large dust bunnies in it. I've gotten used to it on the lowest setting so that I don't even notice it in my bedroom. Don't forget to vacuum the surfaces of the unit and inner bits you can reach - ironically, they attract dust and well.My bionaire egg cleaner is also going- it is as of this writing still a few bucks cheaper and is an Amazon choice. It also has a filter change light. Its buttons feel a little cheesy but they light up and as I've mentioned it has a blue Ring of Clean light at the bottom. Personally, I'd get the bionaire again over this because its cheaper and has a few extra features for less money. But the Hamilton beach unit is also a worthy buy if you like the style and no frills design.Update April 21 2020: Hamilton Beach air cleaner is still going, still removing dust from the air. The filter material is coated but the frame of the filter is made of paper and held in by two bendable plastic clips (which will break eventually so try to remove filter carefully). Price has dropped down to "reasonable" range again. I should note its rival, the bionaire egg, is also working but one of the cheapo buttons has lost the led light functions.

Great machine!
I have three of these - one in the bedroom, bathroom, and living room. That's how much I like it!Cleaning the filter is super easy and takes seconds. The sound is virtually unnoticeable at the low setting, there's no annoying ON light, and I love that it can lay horizontal or stand vertical.A really good little machine that does well in my bathroom, keeping the dust down from the litter box. Highly recommended!

Highly recommended
I use this in a 13 x 10 foot bedroom. Putting it on high for an hour before bedtime effectively cleans the room's air and makes it easy to breathe when going to sleep. Noticed an incredible difference even the first night, and had the easiest allergy season ever after getting this unit. The medium setting provides a soft white noise which aids in relaxation, and the unit outputs a nice cool-feeling breeze. I don't actually use the low setting (which is pretty much silent) since I don't feel that it's running enough air through at that level to do much good, but that's just my perspective. It may not be a true hepa, as far as removing down to the tiniest particles from the air, but it removes all the major allergens which is what counts for me. At a fraction of the price of the high-grade air purifiers, this unit is great value - especially since you don't need to buy replacement filters which can get expensive over time.

Good for getting rid of airborne dust - minor allergens
Those who suffer from minor allergies like myself can benefit from this. It does clean out much of the airborne dust particles which in turn makes it easier to breathe. It also means that the dust that normally settles on flat surfaces doesn't occur as often since this is trapping most of them.Pros:Lowest setting can be used for a calming white noise at night which is fantasticCleans out airborne dust - less dust accumulation on flat surfacesEasy to clean, just open the front and pop the filter outCons:Might not work for those with severe allergies as the filter doesn't seem to be true HEPA grade

The great thing about this unit is
This model is quiet, light-weight and I really noticed a difference in our bedroom at night. It only cleans one room at a time, which is why it is relatively inexpensive (I purchased it for around $80). You can certainly get other brand models that will clean larger areas for much more $$$. This was adequate for our family. The great thing about this unit is, it has a permanent HEPA-grade filter that can be vacuumed clean. No more worries about hunting down those hard-to-find filter parts and spending a fortune on aftermarket stuff. I appreciate that convenience most of all.
