Oxyrhynchus is a city in upper Egypt that was established in 332 BC and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites ever discovered. Saville references the layer upon layer of discoveries at Oxyrhynchus in her new body of work, the final effect being a mysterious narrative of layered bodies and images. The dozen new works presented are a combination of oil, charcoal, and pastel on canvas and a combination of landscape and figures weaving throughout each other. Perfection in Art Book Publication!
This is the extensive publication that Gagosian London has produced for its show of Jenny Saville's art OXYRHNCHUS. The printed reproductions are large and of the most high quality of any art book that honors one of the great artist/painters living. All of the works are very large and the book finishes with images from the gallery with the art works installed. What a fine gallery to honor this Art (Gagosian always does it right)! There is excellent scholastic writing to give context, even an image of an original page that T.S. Eliot typed and hand corrected to what was to become his famous poem THE WASTE LAND and how it gives context to OXYCHRYNCHUS where Jenny Saville's art is layer up layer of our human "waste land" made sensuous like the touching "skin", the surface of either the paper or canvas. Even the binding is just like canvas with her markings reproduced as if one were able to touch the surface of her work via this magnificent book.

Layers upon layers!
A most wonderful look at Jenny Saville's latest work. The initial glance through the book shows an artist very familiar with her subject matter, the human body. Reading the text only enhances what we see on the page. Inspiring!
