Q: what voltage and mA does the power supply need to be to feed the power socket? Also is it positive or negative centre connection?

Its a positive centre a LINDY 1.5m USB 1.35mm Inner / 3.5mm Outer DC Cable ASIN: B00CXNMBVI or similar will work. You need a USB power supply to power it like a mobile phone charger, I use an old Apple iPhone charger but pretty much any will do. The output from the charger needs to be 5 volts and anything from 1 amp should do. However I have found that the hub limits the power output through its USB sockets irrespective of what power supply you connect and it wont run external hard drives. It does however charge phones and tablets if a bit slowly. Works OK for SD cards and USB external data connections, mice and keyboards etc. Hope this helps.

Q: how long are the cables

Mine is fitted and the cables all tacked on to the desk but roughly a metre.

Q: Is the sd card reader usb 3.0 speed?

As for the usb speed I can't answer as I never got mine fitted due to the diameter of this being 60mm which is smaller than a standard desk cable port of 80mm. I only thought there was one size. Ended up returning it.
