Is this a large diaphragm microphone? My son is a rapper and that is what he wants and I 'm not even sure what it is.

Yes, you could definitely use this to record voice acting. Especially if you are recording from home. What you also need is an audio interface to record. I also suggest looking into the the Rode NT1 which is the newer version of this mic. Either one is a great mic. I own them both.

what if i just want the microphone? can i just pay for that?

Now you can anyways but only in the nt1 and nt1000. It still comes with a clip and dust cover just no shock mount and cable. Its just called RODE NT1 no -KIT at the end.
