It is a digestive aid but the main purpose it was prescribed for me was to keep my cholesterol in check naturally. If taken after every meal it helps the liver process & eliminate fat. Fat build-up in the liver slows down digestion & causes the cholesterol build-up in the arteries. It took about 6 months after I started taking it for my cholesterol to drop from 245 to 199. I've been using A-F Betafood for at least 15 years now & my cholesterol runs from 171 to 191. Yes, it is small pills. I've been taking this for years, along with Livaplex by SP - The AF Betafood is made from beets and is very helpful, especially to those of us whose gallbladders have been removed. AFB aids in digestion and, coupled with Livaplex, makes a big difference in one's ability to digest fats.
