I got this for my 2 granddaughters to use while visiting. It comes with horrible instructions, but luckily it isn't rocket science, so was easy to figure out. But I don't think a child under 5 could figure it out without an adult teaching them. But once my grandkids were shown a few times, they got the hang of using it for various things.They enjoyed the pre-made slides that came with it, however, we went to the hobby store and bought some empty clear slides and went to the park and collected some pond water, as well as river water, ocean water, and rain water from around our house and made slides to compare the animals and stuff in each water. They enjoyed being able to magnify the slides by 1000X and see so much happening in the water samples. I too, was quite amazed.It is a smallish microscope, but that's great for little hands. I'm just not sure how sturdy and durable it will be. It seems a little flimsy in areas, might last a few months with regular weekend use. Even so, it was worth the price just to see their eyes light up watching the waterbears and paramecium swimming in the waters. They have also been bringing samples of leaves and bugs they find at their home to my house to view with it.The educational value alone is worth 5 stars, but my doubts about the durability and the shoddy instructions, make me take away 2 stars.

Yes it's plastic...it was sent as a gift for my 6 year old. I think $40 spent on adult version would be a better use of money. The screen was also defective. I had trouble working the thing. . . Doesnt seem super intuitive. It was stuck on another language to begin with. If your expectations are low, great...your kid can get some play out of it. But I don't value the cheaply made products and would rather buy something different for the same money. I looked up some that are more like a handheld easy to carry around, similar product.

The price was unbeatable considering the quality of the product as well as the extras!! Fantastic!
