It'll  work really well. I haven't used it for gym clothes but it does a great job on my sweaty  filthy gardening clothes. I washed them after tilling  a new 10 x  10 garden bed in the middle of the summer.I was tilling in some composted manure. I was very dirty but all the sweaty smell and the manure  smells disappeared when I washed my clothes, so did the dirt.
