Q: What is the width of the top?

The width of the disposable Candle holder id 2 1/2"

Q: will this holder work with a candle Size: 1/2" Dia x 4-1/4" H?

8/16 is actually 1/2.... so it’s a pretty big difference. I tried putting candles that were 1/2- 3/4 and these were too big for all of them. Even when I pinched the bottom it would not hold them in place. These were larger than I expected.

Q: Can you set these down on a table? And will they be strong enough to support the weight of a taper, votive, or chime candle?

No, they need to be supported by a candlestick of some kind. They are lightweight aluminum foil. If they are in a container, they can suppport anything, though the opening is not as huge as a pillar candle. A taper will fit with no problem at all. A smaller candle will need to have the foil pinched in around it, but the nice thing is that you can do that with these since they are essentially foil in a shape. Hope this helps!
