I’m using these to catch “accidents” with an elderly dog. Have them in the floor by a door in case we don’t notice that he needs to go out. Most times he’s passed urine centrally on the pad and it’s then extremely absorbent and collects the urine with no leakage. So I would consider them very absorbent.

No, you need large nappy pins. They are only suitable for small leakage as there is very little absorbency, however handy for travelling as you can place on hotel bed, put a towel over and then pin to sheet overnight, then remove in morning, rinse pad carefully and hang to dry over bath.
