Q: Can you attach the backpack straps to it?

We do not use backpack straps as my daughter prefers long strap diagonally and then on her back.But I will concur with James and say thisnis a very light and roomy case.we are very happy with it.

Q: What size violin case would fit a 13 inch viola?

4/4 size in length but it depends on how thick the sides are. This case fits my 4/4 violin well. May not be deep enough for a viola.

Q: What type of fabric is the cover? I am wondering if i can apply iron on transfer designs?

moderate thin thickness , coarse denim like surface, may apply metal broach on it

Q: Can the front pocket hold a stand music book?

Yes, it can hold a standard sized music book (ie, Suzuki)
