Q: Would this work under my low bed that has carpeting underneath?

I am not sure I understand the question. Yes it would work under a low bed. We use it to get under the oven to get crumbs and cat toys out. If the question is would it work on your carpet it would work to get items out from under the bed. Would it clean the top of your carpet, probably not.

Q: Is it really Retractable? Description says yes, but several reviews say no.

This under-appliance wand worked great for me. It is not retractable, which I prefer since many retractable wands have been reported to fail to maintain their length. However, I have successfully shortened it by detaching half of the handle of the wand so I could use it in a tight spot. I am thinking about pinning Swiffer sheets to the included cloth cleaning sock to extend it's life. I first considered getting a vacuum attachment, but my refrigerator sits too low to allow the vacuum hose to slide fully underneath it. So this wand worked out great for me, and it will probably last longer than I do. :D Happy Spring - cleaning!
