Q: How does this perform under the nose and chin? I have a merkur adjustable and find it very annoying when I'm trying to shave under my nose.

The Merkur Slant razor takes a bit of care to get used to because it is so effective and reaches where other razors do not - what a lovely clean shave it provides once you and your face have the hang of it. A good warm wash and then lather up is all that it needs. If the area allows it, like the neck, go with the stubble then against it for the closest cut - keep it wet though.

Q: Is this better than Merkur 34 HD?

IMO it is better than the 34C HD. The 34C HD and some Merkur razors have quality assurance issues, blade alignment issues, and long-term durability concerns with their Chrome finish. The 34C HD I ordered, did have blade alignment issues and was more aggressive than my AS-D2 and 37C that I ordered. The 37C, for me, was absolutely superb, giving me a close comfortable shave that was irritation-free. I couldn't say the same for the 34C HD which cut me slightly. I have been shaving for a few years now in DE shaving so my technique is pretty good.

Q: would this be suitable for a woman? Give such a close shave?

If you mean to shave their face then yes. If you mean armpits and legs then no. Reason being it is not a flat head. It has an angled profile which makes it perfect for shaving your face without cutting. If you tried to shave an armpit or leg with it you may find the contoured angle would result in you keeping cutting yourself. If they offer a flat profile version then this would definitely be suitable!

Q: Is this a two piece or three piece razor

It's a 2 piece, you unscrew the bottom of the razor at the bottom of the handle and lift out the top of the razor. You can pull out the bottom of the razor to clean and dry if you wish to clean it so technically you can say it's a 3 piece but for day to day use I'd say it was a 2 piece. It's the same as a merkur 34c heavy duty with a different head.
