As an active ingredient, Pyrithione Zinc has the same effect on dogs as it does on humans. This bar is a registered OTC drug for human use. K9 drugs are regulated by the FDA and we cannot market this soap for K9 use because we've not tested or registered the soap for animals. In 1994, Congress passed a law that allows veterinarians to prescribe approved human drugs for extra-label uses in animals under specified conditions. You need to ask your veterinarian.

Q: Why is salt in the soap?

Sodium chloride (salt) is used to chemically strengthen the formulation by balancing the equilibrium (the common ion effect). "Salting out of soap" (also known as salt-induced precipitation) is important for soaps that contain glycerin. In addition, saturated sodium chloride helps the soap to dry/cure/harden. The amount of salt in this bar is a fraction of one percent.

Oils are used to make soap. All soaps use oil. In a nutshell, here's how soap is made at a very basic level - dissolve alkali like sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide in water. Mix the solution into oil (plant based or animal fat based) slowly while stirring. Heat the mixture, and boil it for 10-12 minutes, while stirring. The solution is transformed via chemical reaction into soap. The oil is chemically altered into soap. The soapmaking reaction is called saponification, and after reacting, the mixture is said to be saponified. At the end of the process there is no oil.
