Q: Did the molds you purchased smell of petroleum even after washing them?

Yes, they had a strong smell right out of the packaging. I washed in hot soapy water, and then filled the molds with water and microwaved as instructions say to remove the odor. The odor went away, and is not an issue.

Q: Do these leave a flavor or scent on the baked goods?

I have used these a few times and have not had any issues. I can't speak for every one of them. But so far have not had issues. Just makes sure they are thoroughly washed before you use them to ensure a better product.

Q: Are these half of a sphere - in other words if I made two of them and put them together would it be a ball or would it be misshapen?

they will create balls if you use a very thin layer between the two
