Q: Does it have to be glued down. Could it just be layed over butyl and then covered with the carpet

I would say it doesn’t have to be glued down. I just finished a 1970 Chevelle from the firewall to the top of the back wall. I did tack glue it on the sides at the door jam and kick panels just so the carpet lays flat, otherwise the mat “lifts” at the edge and disturbs the lay of the carpet. Also I made relief cuts over the compound curves and sealed the seams with 2” wide vinyl strips.

Yes, Luxury Liner Pro Mass Loaded Vinyl is the material that blocks out exhaust drone, engine/diesel/turbo noise, and other air borne noises. Luxury Liner Pro is Mass Loaded Vinyl infused with Closed Cell Foam so it is ready to attach to your CLD vibration mats or the metal of your trunk, floor, doors, and walls. Keep in mind barrier layers like MLV need to be as close to 100% coverage as possible to fully block out sound. You want to get this product between you and the noise source (i.e. cabin floors, trunks, cabin firewalls). Luxury Liner Pro also offers a great thermal insulation barrier to keep your A/C inside the vehicle and the hot air out and vise versa in winter.
