Q: Is this appropriate for babies under one?

This is nothing more than Zinc Oxide pre-applied to a sterile bandage. The common baby products for diaper rash (on which it works great), that are creamy and thick, use Zinc Oxide (in a much higher concentration) so it appears that this product would be just fine.

Q: What is the expiration date of this product? It would be nice if expiration dates be either displayed on the picture or listed in the description.

On the side of my box it says expires 06-2019. Obviously it’s been awhile since I needed it but I would not be afraid to use it for something not too serious.

Q: What are the ingredients of the emulsifying base? Any parabens or pthalates?

Ingredients aren't listed. Awhile back I had the same question so I contacted the manufacturer who told me that the paste was 7% zinc oxide but would not tell me if anything else was in there. Thats when I got the idea that I could make my own for a fraction of the cost. I purchased ordinary sterile gauze and a jar of "Boudreaux's Butt Paste" (its a serious product) from Amazon. Boudreaux's Butt Paste is 12% to 20% zinc oxide, is a product that is intended for use on a baby's tender bottom when they have (or to avoid) diaper rash, and it works magnificently well. Its far easier to use than Viscopaste because I apply it to one side of the bandage (or directly to my skin, then wrap the area with the rest of the gauze and I never get any zinc oxide paste on my hands. Since its double the strength of the Viscopaste, it really provides me relief very quickly. Its now in my first aid kit next to the sterile bandages, and it can also be used as a premium quality sunblock (just use a little, its very thick),

Q: Is this a self adhesive bandage or is medical tape needed to secure?

It will adhere but you need a covering over the paste such as coban tape.
