Q: How will these hold up to a weed eater?

I use my line weed eater right up against the slats and so far no damage visible and we've had them in place for several years. Plus ours are off white and we pressure wash them if they get dirty.

Q: I see that tubes can be angled which impacts privacy by viewing angle. Can I choose the angle or is it based on the design of the chain links?

I think you are limited by the fence you already have. When you look from an angle in one position of the yard, it looks more open between the slats, but when you look from the opposite angle from the same position, it looks entirely closed off. I could not select the angle of more privacy.

Q: Chain link fence under metal awning, not enough clearance to insert slats from above. Would there be any problem with installing slats horizontally?

Chain link is woven in a way that allows slats to be inserted horizontally. The Viper Channel may not be as effective or even necessary when slats are installed this way. Ridged Slats can be overlapped to avoid gaps in the slats. The notched end can be trimmed off. Tube Slats and SoliTube Slats cannot be be overlapped. SoliTube Slats do not have notches to hold the bottom of the slat in the Viper Channel, so there is no need to trim the ends. Regardless of the direction in which the slats are installed, your chain link fence must be in good shape, installed properly, and meet the criteria detailed in our listing for the slats to work properly. Slats expand and contract in heat. Long, continuous lengths of slats that do not overlap may have issues. Some buyers have had success installing slats horizontally. The manufacturer/seller does not recommend this nor does it guarantee the results.
