Got Me Wrong to Rae Dawn Chong - AiC at their Best
"As of now I'll bet you got me wrong..."SAP proves what a unique and versatile group Alice in Chains was back in 1992. If you were a fan of MTV's Unplugged series SAP, as an EP, gave you little more-- and Alice in Chains Unplugged were at the top of their game proving what a stripped down "grunge" band could do with the austerity of acoustics, some simple percussion, atypical melodies and great lyrics. Also leveraging the immense, soulful talent of Chris Cornell (featured on "Right Turn" and "Love Song" and Ann Wilson of Heart ("Brother" and "Am I Inside").To put this album in context with the year 1992. Nirvana's "Nevermind" was Number 1 on Billboard's Top 200. SAP proceeded "Facelift" which was one of their best albums and the grunge movement was in full swing. We didn't listen to SAP on an iPod like we do today and rock music hasn't been the same ever since."Got Me Wrong" is one of my personal favorites. Simple and soulful with Jerry Cantrell playing some great blues licks and the incomparable and often imitated Layne Staley lyrics and soul. The song says it all about so many things, but mostly what people "got wrong" about one of greatest rock groups of the 90s.The album concludes with a silly "Love Song" which see-saws in a manic-depressive frenzy that you might ask yourself, did I just hear what I thought I heard? Yes, you heard right: That was "Rae Dawn Chong" mentioned in the lyrics and concludes that Alice in Chains had great talent and also a great sense of humor.Their music lives on!

Feels similar to Jar of Flies.
I said in a previous review that I think this EP sounds like it would've been part of Jar of Flies. It kind of has that same vibe. Sap is such a beautiful and dark EP, much like real life. If you like Jar of Flies, I see no reason why you wouldn't like this too and vice versa.

B-side to Jar of Flies (hint: this is an ep)
Alice in Chains has soul. In a little of all of their albums. Face-lift, Dirt and Self Titled, are much more sludge of a mood. Start with Jar of Flies and finish with this. It makes much more sense 💗

Reach for something strong...
Alice In Chains had put themselves on both the alternative and heavy metal maps with a pulverizing set of songs courtesy of their debut LP `Facelift'. As a follow-up, the band came out of left field with a mostly acoustic EP called `Sap'. Intended to be rough demos for future records, the quartet reconsidered and put `Sap' out warts and all in early 1992. `Sap' got little if any national recognition until the song "Got Me Wrong" appeared on the `Clerks' movie soundtrack two years later and became an alt-rock radio favorite. Four songs, (not counting the mostly instrumental nonsense hidden track) with each song possessing a certain sense of the bleak but also each seemed to be filled with a tremendous harmonic strength. "Brother" is probably my favorite but all are noteworthy including the all-star Seattle jam, "Right Turn". Ann Wilson also makes some notable vocal contributions to both "Brother" and "Am I Inside", keeping the Seattle connection alive and not limiting it to just the grunge underground. `Sap' is more than a happy accident and it is a worthwhile purchase for anyone who wants to know what the fuss was all about, from a true indie rock standpoint.
