I put Vics or menthol breathing salve on a cotton swab then put it on top of white vent as the steam comes up. I didn't like the menthol mixed in the water tray because of its crusting. You can also buy pads, but I went cheap.

Q: Can you put salt, like saline solution?

Yes, that’s what I use it for, just don’t leave it in the the saline solution in the steamer day in and day out. Empty it after use and rinse it. But if you do leave it for a few days, add vinegar and it cleans it out beautifully

Q: Why is the inside metal container discolored?

It's stainless steel color, possibly just the angle of the picture causing it to look discolored.
