Q: There are mixed reviews as to what strings the ukulele came with. Do they come with Aquilas or not?

Mine came with aquila string and two of my friends in my ukulele club also received theirs with aquila strings as well.

Q: What type of strings?

Nylon synthetic.....2 or 3 possible brands.

Q: does this have a low G string?

From the factory no. I changed it once it arrived.

Q: As a shortcut to a string question: can I use thinner gauge strings on this instrument to brighten up the tone? I assume light steel strings are out.

Kala is great company. Check out their websight, or call them for help, BUT I'm sure steel strings are a no go.
