Q: What is the inside depth of the bottom section? I'd like to use the bottom for a 10" (12"with handles) square by 4 1/2 deep dish.

its about 15 1/2" by 12" by 4" tall. It holds a standard cake pan nicely. You may have some "give" room if you keep the top section unzipped. Its a very nice carrier.

Q: Is the bottom of the top compartment rigid?

It is insulated but not rigid. The 2 casserole dishes I usually use both have lids. If I have a small dish I use a metal cover. The top compartment is also expandable. I would recommend this carrier and would also purchase again.

Q: would this double decker casserole carrier emit odor? that is important to me.

don't worry, this casserole carrier for hot or cold food, wouldn't have odor unless you stain it without cleaning.

Q: Would this accomodate a salad bowl?

Only if it's smaller than the dimensions. This is about the size of a lasagna pan but because it has two compartments you could fit two pans (one in each part). Of course for salad you could always use a retanglur container if it has a lid or cover in tin foil and be careful in transporting it. :)
